84 years ago today. Japan’s largest strike force of the entire war: Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku. I think I should add it to Midway 1981 as a what-if scenario. What if the Enterprise, Lexington, and Saratoga were in the area? What if the old battleships weren’t sunk at anchor?

The lack of I. in A.I. becomes very apparent if you have to do anything out of the ordinary. Path smoothing along a fixed path? Hopeless. Network synchronization? Forget about it. Fortunately much of programming is boilerplate stuff which it is really good at.

Plain C is such a joy to program in after decades of higher level languages. Xcode and Claude fix all the gotchas that C is famous for, leaving just the unadulterated goodness.

I’m using C + SDL3 for my next game. SDL3 is very nice. The call-back API allows me to use SwiftUI for in-app purchase and Game Center matchmaking. The best of both worlds!

Apple’s Game Center quirks:
* Most of the time the call-backs are called from the main thread but sometimes they are called from a background thread.
* When you set the delegate after creating a match it can deliver any pending messages instantly as a side effect of the assignment.
