Watching – Thursday Murder Club
A made for streaming murder mystery with a dynamite cast, how could I not watch this? The Pitch Four senior citizens with a 'hobby' of solving cold cases finds themselves with a hot case that affects their home. Working on the sly with a recently transferred police officer, they might uncover more than they bargained for. With names like Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsly, David Tennant, and Tom Ellis, I was sold from the start.

Playing – Pirate Borg
Once again I managed to get folks together for Pirate Borg! Last time we did the semi-sandbox Buried in the Bahamas (recommended as a good starting place, with some combat, exploration, and a dungeon puzzle). We were less dark and gritty, more weird and wacky, but still worked just fine. If there was a lesson to be learned, it was "

From My Table – Magic Mastery for D&D 5.24
I had the fortune to have played lots of different RPG systems with various mechanics early on in my gamer origins, including several home brew rule sets and a couple formed from smashing systems together like grafting Runequest combat phases to Chivalry & Sorcery mechanics. Then I was introduced to the Weapons Mastery of the Dungeons & Dragons Master Set…

#RPGaDay2025 – Tavern
Skipping Day#2 for the moment as it triggered a little longer than planned. Meanwhile, some thoughts on - TAVERN (Where, Adventure, Excited). Those random prompts remind me of Cheers, where everybody knows your name and isn't that the sort of thing an Adventurer should be excited about? Taverns are a staple of the genre (even if they aren't really historical, but that's a rant for another time) and a straight forward hub of information, quests, social roleplay, and the occasional colourful NPC staggering in with a bag full of coin and a blade in their back.

#RPGaDay2025 – Patron
Once again I find myself well and behind on the annual #RPGaDay challenge, instead working on building up some locations for my home brew fantasy greatly infused with historical examples. Really, what I need to do is work on a more dilligent output of shorter posts - so here goes! #1 Patron (random roll 4-5-9, when-accessory-confidence) Patron rewards are a nice little dopamine buzz.

Playing – Cthulhu: Death May Die
I've been following the Mythos since I was a teenager. I read the short stories, played the TTRPG, and even picked up the original Arkham Horror (basically Candyland with eldritch horrors roaming the neighbourhood). Over the years I've seen the proliferation across movies, books, and games (including the Smash Up: Obligatory Cthulhu Set), more than I could keep up with.

Playing – Pirate Borg
"A scurvy-ridden, rules light, art heavy tabletop RPG ... This game is about being a greedy, filthy, scoundrel." So reads the text at Pirate Borg's homepage, barely scratching the grimdark surface of the Mork Borg aesthetic of an 80's metal band album ala Corrosion of Conformity or Iron Maiden splattered across a handbook akin to an independent zine bound into 166 pages of pirates and eldritch horror.

Watching – Fantastic Four: First Steps
TlDR - Overall, enjoyed it but I can't call it a great movie. It's Vanilla, tasty and satisfying but really doesn't surprise or whelm. ** Avoiding as many spoiilers as I can ** First off, I'd say it's more a family drama that features some action and special effects so if you are looking for a light, banter filled, punch 'em up and energy beams, go back and watch The Incredibles again - IMHO still the best take on the FF.

Playing – Mausritter TTRPG
Last week, I finally got a game of Mausritter to the table (the core rules are available for free as are many adventures). I did up a quick game pitch and we did up characters for this very simple TTRPG and played for a couple of hours, saw the death of a character, the rescue of mice, and finding a potential ally with a neighbouring crow.

Gamer Theory – Dragons & Elements
For years I've been applying a house rule that most undead creatures would be immune to necrotic damage but take additional damage from radiant sources. Vulnerability (double damage) seemed to be excessive, but I picked up another house rule to apply +50% damage for vulnerability that seemed a better fit and still not that complex for the math. When I started running…

Game Theory – Dungeon Map Evolution
I'm a long time gamer and seen many a map. Recently experiences at a couple of tables have really highlighted how map expectations have changed over the years and gamer generations. I've got fond memories of our DM describing the rooms of "from the door you enter, the wall goes 20 feet west, 30 feet north, 10 feet east around the balrog and then a 10 foot exit heading north, and another ten feet east and ten foot exit heading north, and ten feet east and 30 feet south and connecting west to the door you entered from.
