Paper alert! I'm happy to share that my first research paper has been published! 🐝🌸

Road verges can support #pollinators but their potential for preserving representatively diverse and even communities is limited, due in part to high densities of non-native plants.

Really excited to share that the first paper I’ve contributed to has been published! With the help of citizen science, we described 34 new Australian parasitoid wasp species, including Apanteles darthvaderi. doi.org/10.3897/zook...

DEI pt3: Fieldwork is on the HAU campus with no more than 15 minutes of walking to sites. Sampling can be done from walkways without traversing uneven ground and transport provided to sites if needed. Field and lab work will be adapted to suit the accessibility and learning needs of participants.
scienceheather.bsky.social
DEI pt2: To ensure equality of access to this training opportunity places on the course will be awarded via a lottery ballot system, although priority will be given to NERC funded PhD students and ECRs and applicants working on NERC related topics.
scienceheather.bsky.social
DEI pt1: The course is aimed at PhD students and ECRs but is open to anyone, with no prior experience of entomology required. We particularly welcome applications from anyone who is underrepresented in academia, and especially in entomology or the ecological and environmental sciences.
scienceheather.bsky.social
Logistics: The course runs from 30th June to 4th July 2025. It is fully funded by NERC and free to attend. Food and accommodation are provided. Course participants will have their own rooms based on the Harper Adams University campus. Travel expenses within the UK will be refunded.
scienceheather.bsky.social
Background: The course provides foundational skills for ecological and evolutionary research in entomology, with a particular emphasis on field sampling techniques, insect identification, and essential laboratory skills such as insect culturing and specimen preparation and curation.

It is my pleasure to announce that applications are now open for our FREE five-day (30th June-4th July2025 ) @royentsoc.bsky.social #entomology PhD/ECR summer school funded by NERC. Application deadline is 8th May.

Exciting new addition to the skyline here @harperadamsuni.bsky.social with the installation of a @rothamsted.bsky.social Insect Survey suction tower. Part of BBSRC-supported National Capability, this 12.2m high tower joins 15 other towers recording the migration patterns of aphids.

Here's a stunner for #FossilFriday, just look at that beetle's preserved wing case! It belongs to a group called frog-legged leaf beetles (so-named for their extra-juicy rear legs), paleontologists called its pattern "the most perfectly preserved pigment-based colouration known in fossil beetles" 🧪
49 million-year-old beetle looks like it was squashed yesterday
Paleontologists named the insect "Attenborough's Beauty," after Sir David Attenborough.

Well I guess I'm here now. Hi friends👋.

And this is what I look like in case you forgot or we haven't met before.

I'm hoping I can connect with fellow insect enthusiasts, educators and all round appreciators of science like myself.

ICYMI - our new paper reports a systematic review of the cultural ecosystem services provided by wetlands:

authors.elsevier.com/a/1k0257szSJ...

🌍 🧪 🦤
An infographic illustrating the findings of our new paper on the cultural ecosystem services of wetlands. The infographic features, as the centre, a drawing of a wetland (featuring reeds, water, a small wading bird, and some insects). Arranged around this central image are bubbles that list the percentage of papers that we reviewed that reported information on different types of cultural ecosystem services associated with wetlands. These include categories such as recreation and tourism, inspiration, sense of place, aesthetic value, and bequest.
