Zoom of the piece quoted, focus being on their kiss Being face to face with an angel let alone being kissed by one is often depicted as something holy, blissful and larger than life. I wanted to depict that here as well but removed from a religious context and turned to personal sacredness. Wreg as a character (as many queer people at some point in their lives) often finds that he can truly be and express himself during quiet nights and alone. Those fleeting moments are a piece of heaven to him – like being kissed by an angel. Wreg: nakedness is a vulnerability when paired against a fully armoured opponent. When discussing heated romances and homoeroticism of knighthood, there’s a thin line between crossing swords and erotic – enemy knights become lovers, swords turn into manhoods, and armour a protective layer between flesh. Wreg doesn’t seem bothered to bare himself armour-less to his ’opponent’ and completely trusts him to not hurt him. Angel: the angel’s sparrow wings are a reference to both old Finnish paganism and fusion of paganism and christianity. Lintukoto (bird-home) was a mythical plane where birds came from and moved to during winter. It was believed human souls could also travel there, and it located over the horizon. Lintukoto is often thought to be a peaceful and homely place. While this place may not exist anymore in christianity, great many songs, poems and beliefs deal with birds – especially with dead loved ones coming back to visit us in form of birds. Banner: Banner-bearers were important soldiers, but also especially vulnerable as they were in frontline and did not have effective tools to defend themselves. An angry red banner can be seen as a colour suited for war, but also for passionate love. It guides both knights and wraps around them but also leaves them vulnerable to harm and hurt.

Meeting on the tower stairs

Crop of the piece quoted with focus on wreg’s middle part and flowers on him Tldr; it’s a love letter about queer resilience, and the grit to flower and bloom even in rough condition and spite of everything, in all their beauty! Midsummer spells: Midsummer eve’s night was/is conscidered potent with magic. There are plenty to choose from, but the ones known by common folk usually are amorous in nature. The one referenced here has multiple variations, but essentially you are supposed to roll around or run through fields of flowers or crop to make someone fall in love with you or boost your luck in love overall! As the piece is called midsummer morning, one can suppose Wreg had perfomed a spell during eve and had fallen asleep - now waking up to a new, and hopefully love filled morning. Flowers: Wreg has seven dandelions on him, referencing multiple midsummer spells that usually involve seven flowers - they also symbolize hope and strenght. On the field around him are white clovers (good fortune) and lupine (imagination/creativity). All the three flowers are considered as weeds where I’m from, so I wanted to showcase their beauty and resilience againts all odds. Also lupine resembles latin for wolf (And I’m assuming that’s where it got it’s name), and Wreg’s family crest so happens to be a wolf - not to mention his lover’s crest carries a lilac, which Wreg mistook for a lupine and picked him one as a token of love…!

Here we go, a new guy appears. Some details are probably not obvious bcs at some point I just ran with an idea I had. His heraldic animal is the goose and the vibe was desperate and I do think he kind of does look a bit desperate.
