We welcomed Climate Minister Kerry McCarthy MP @kerrymp.bsky.social to the Met Office

Throughout her visit the Minister had the opportunity to see firsthand how we support the work of her department and the wider UK Government’s Net Zero ambitions

The honours system can end up in the media for the wrong reasons but it heartens me to be able to be a small part of something like this - a good person quietly doing good things that make a difference. Lovely that the system can recognise this. Congrats Matt.

A festive treat: @rte.ie have brought together scientists to help answer children's questions about Santa, including the important work of @metoffice.bsky.social and our friends in Met Eireann in helping him find his way on Christmas Eve. One of our most important roles!

There's been a lot of water through the Exe recently and it's brought so much rubbish it's heartbreaking. It's like something from the 80s this morning. A few years back it felt like we'd really made progress on single use plastic but on days like this it doesn't seem like it!

Plenty of water in the River Exe tonight and many others across the country after recent snow and rain. The Environment Agency has over 100 flood alerts and warnings out so keep an eye on them if you're near water. check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/alerts-and-w...

What a joy to have snow in Exeter today, even though I couldn't be in it for long. Wholly failed to take scenic photos - doh! Here's a few I did manage. We've a warning for ice tonight as temps drop so please be careful if you're out ❄️

Storm Bert will bring multiple hazards to the UK this weekend but also significant contrasts from place to place and from hour to hour.

Here's a thread of graphics that highlight some of those contrasts.

First, a snapshot at 7am on Saturday - wet, windy and mild for some, heavy snow for others:

I think the 10 day trend is probably my favourite of our longer videos and Alex does a brilliant job here of explaining what's to come and the drivers in under 10 mins. Great for understanding a bit more context around the weather. ❄️

We're all snow junkies @metoffice.bsky.social so while it's busy at this time of year, we do love it ❄️. An added bonus is my feeds are filled with beautiful snow images from around the country, and great stories like this...

It's been snowing in the UK and the road gritters are out in force, begging the question:
Have you ever wondered where that grit actually COMES from?
The answer is more magical, beautiful and fascinating than you probably realised.

Feeling a little old this morning as some of my team arrive in Baku for their first COP and I realise mine was 14 years ago (at DECC)! Wishing the best for all involved in week two and UK climate leadership efforts #COP29.
