🔴🔝🔴 SFC Top 10 - most league goals in a season 🔴🔝🔴

#1: 112 (Div 3 South, 1957-58)

112 goals scored and a goal difference of +40 wasn’t enough to secure promotion, as we finished only 6th. Don Roper and John Hoskins scored 18 goals each, but top scorer was Derek Reeves with 31.

#2: 106 (Division 3, 1959-60)

We edged out Norwich in the title race thanks to our attacking prowess. Derek Reeves hit an incredible 39 goals in 46 league games. We have still not won our division since.

The last time we scored 100 league goals in a season. Opposing defences had no answer to George Kirby, Martin Chivers, Terry Paine and George O’Brien, who between them scored 73 goals.

Long-serving forward Eric Day top-scored with 28 league goals for a free-scoring Saints side. But a leaky defence meant we lost 20 games and could only finish 14th in the table.

#5: 88 (Division 3, 1958-59)

Goals flowed at either end all season. We scored 88, but also conceded 80 and finished 14th in the table. Derek Reeves scored 16 goals and Charlie Livesey bagged 14.

Rangers may no longer want him, but Russell Martin did the business for us in the Championship. The team went unbeaten for 22 league games between September and February.

We escaped the third tier in style, posting our best ever season goal difference in the Football League of +48. Rickie Lambert scored 21 goals and Lee Barnard hit 14.

After narrowly missing out on promotion the previous two seasons, Ted Bates’s men finally made it to the top flight for the 1st time in the club’s history. Martin Chivers scored 30 league goals.

This was our first season down in the 3rd tier since 1960. Alan Pardew’s men couldn’t overcome a 10pt deduction and a slow start to the season, and finished 1 place outside the playoffs.

Nigel Adkins’s men secured back-to-back promotions and a return to the Premier League after a brilliant season. Rickie Lambert top scored with 27 goals.

Herbert Ward (3), George Nineham (3), Jack Angus (2), Fred Hollands (2), Harry Offer (2), Ernie Taylor and Lachie Thomson were the legends who scored in our record win against Newbury.

Albert Brown became - and remains - the only Saints player to hit 7 goals in a game. We were Southern League top scorers that year, but only finished 3rd. Pompey won it.
