Today, on #WorldFoodDay2025, we’re reminded that food is not just nourishment, it’s a matter of balance, equality and shared responsibility.
At SAFE, we work every day to make our food systems healthier and more sustainable.

On #WorldMentalHealthDay, SAFE points to growing research linking diet to mental health.

🧠Poor nutrition is increasingly associated with a higher risk of anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, and sleep difficulties.

SAFE strongly supports mandatory requirements on traceability and front-of-package labelling for products containing #GMOs and the New Genetic Techniques (#NGTs), alike.
safefoodeurope.bsky.social
Allowing imports of #GMOs from third countries is not fair as it creates different sets of rules for EU farmers and farmers from third countries. Once certain #GMOs enter the food system and the environment, they will be there forever. We must make sure that risk assessments are properly conducted.

We support the @europarl.europa.eu resolution against the authorisation of genetically modified maize #DP51291 in food and feed, which lacks the proper legal basis. We call on the
@ec.europa.eu to withdraw it.

🍏 Our remarks, following reports that the @ec.europa.eu is considering taxing #ultra-processed foods:

1️⃣ The processing methods of #UPFs constitute a health hazard in themselves, as growing evidence shows. Focusing on the ingredients alone will limit the impact of public health policies.

2️⃣ Taxes must focus on unhealthy ingredients used by industries, like additives and sugar — as in the British model, to encourage changes in formulation and production methods. We oppose taxing the final product, because it would only penalise consumers. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

3️⃣ Formulations using non-natural fibers perpetuate the same problems and require political action.

4️⃣ We call for restrictions on #UPF marketing targeting vulnerable groups, children in particular, both offline and online, including promotions and endorsements. Front-of-package labelling requirements must be implemented.

👩‍🏫 Poor diets have a costly impact on children’s health throughout their lifetime. SAFE promotes healthy diets among children, through food literacy trainings in schools, as a part of the Food4Inclusion project, encouraging children to reduce their consumption of ultra-processed foods and sugar.

⭐Recently, the European Parliament approved a resolution to strengthen the importance of quality criteria in public procurement, beyond price alone.

The resolution contains considerations on quality and sustainability, as well as restrictions on subcontracting, to protect working conditions.
safefoodeurope.bsky.social
🍏At SAFE, we believe in the role that public procurement can play in promoting food safety, sustainability, resilient food systems, and inclusion.
This means school canteens must offer healthy, locally sourced nutritious food, and all supplies including food must be assessed for sustainability.

This will grant access for treatment in the public health care system and removing stigma from people with obesity.

This is the first obesity law in the world, and it should serve as an inspiration for similar legislation in Europe and elsewhere. #LeggePella

We are very happy to welcome the final adoption of the Italian Obesity Law, after approval by the Italian Senate earlier this week. 👏

This groundbreaking law initiated by Iris Zani — from SAFE member Amici Obesi, and FIAO defines obesity as a disease.

A step towards healthier food environments in England!
Multibuy offers are often not beneficial as they promote unhealthy, rather than healthy, foods, leading families (esp lower income ones) to increased overall spending rather than saving money.

🛒 Is that “natural” product really what it claims to be?
Many “natural” labelled products still contain synthetic additives.

SAFE calls for:
⚖️ A legal definition of “synthetic”
📦 Mandatory disclosure on packaging
🚫 No more false “natural” claims

Let’s give meaning back to “natural”.
