Sometimes I'm an akita but you may know me as Raymond the GSD. Former particle physicist (PhD) + salt miner, but now I write software. Using AI for science since '05. I also play guitar, make things, and do nerd stuff. (40, male, straight)-ish. SF Bay area

GUESS WHO'S BACK

#FursuitFriday
every time I see another "software ported to to new language with the help of AI", I'm reminded of *A Deepness in the Sky* when they use the closest thing to AI in that universe to do a rewrite of all the software and no one can make sense of it once they lose their "focus" that makes it possible

ah there it is, the 8 AM email and suddenly appearing critical meeting as the layoffs are announced. I'll know by the end of the day

I could probably expand the last skeet into a blog post. Hmm

Telegraph cables crossed national borders and necessitated precise electrical measurements and internationally standard units to measure them in

If not for that, we might have a cursed inch-ounce-second system, where resistance would be s/in and capacitance would be inches

(sorry genus panthera)
Book Finished: Imperial Science by Bruce J. Hunt

The main thesis is undersea cables forced electromagnetism to become a precision field theory due to propagation phenomena. I really enjoyed it, as a physicist, since I leaned EM but not the context it was developed in
(yes I saw the Jon Bois series)

AI is better at generating hype about what it can do and press for itself than it is at actually doing actual real tasks. We're going to get a lot more shitty software implementations that don't actually work before sanity returns

Cloudflare just published a vibe coded blog post claiming they implemented Matrix on cloudflare workers. They didn't, their post and README is AI generated and the code doesn't do any of the core part...

The scale this morning was down from Friday so that's some evidence for the birthday calories don't count hypothesis because I definitely ate too much celebrating

okay I did the minimum thing so it's not a registrar landing page at least. Next will be figuring out content
I really need to get sabertail dot org working as at least a link site and better as a blog sorta thing because I do things that merit a web medium but I get overwhelmed by the current amount of work I'd need to do to get them up

if anyone is curious, I've been tracking my weight through this whole business of losing the burnout/injury/depression/covid weight

the biggest surprise is I didn't think I'd lost much muscle when dieting but it's hard to see 5 lbs amid the noise of losing over 10x that much fat

one of my mom's most toxic traits is that you can't ever change your mind or do self-improvement because that would mean you weren't perfect to begin with

anyway I had a good birthday and the past year was really good for me because I've been working to improve the things I don't like about my life

I'm rusty but also this seed was kind of troll-y. And I made some good progress on Manifold Garden
January 25, 2026 at 5:13 AM
Thanks everyone that stopped in and wished me a happy birthday! I will hopefully be doing more streams and more interesting streams more regularly. But I wanted to do to get the rust off, and this was a good occasion
Birthday stream is live! Will be going until I get tired or bored, at least a couple hours.

Starting with Manifold Garden and then we will see what we feel like playing

People send me links to these obviously language-model-written things, and I see engagement with them, and I don't know if it's
1) that most people barely read so they don't have a sense for slop
or 2) that a lot of people have a lot of money banked on "AI" so they (or their bots) play along
January 23, 2026 at 9:26 PM
I'll be doing a stream for my birthday.
Saturday PM.

playing some mix of Manifold Garden, aLttP Randomizer, Rocksmith, and RDR2
or maybe I'll put together a guitar pedal

stop by and chat
bring your own cake
stay tuned for more details

2025 was a year of me internalizing "small things add up over time". Usually I procrastinate then crunch on projects until they're done, but can't do that for fitness or getting better at music

Trying to figure out how to carry that into 2026 and apply it to stuff like social and professional life
January 22, 2026 at 8:17 PM
okay and things I liked about FC 2026:
• the Mostly Mammals concert was my sort of thing and a lot of fun
• I got some people trying to dance with me at various dances
• the FurryTel setup was neat even if my fax didn't go through

Looking at myself in the mirror after a workout is so affirming these days. I've struggled with my body since the 4th grade and not hating what I see is such a relief

I am something like an order of magnitude more likely to mopey post before I've worked out, thanks for putting up with me today folks

Most people come out of furry cons feeling great and I rarely do. I've never felt like I belong at them. I'm not weird enough? Or weird in the wrong ways? I'm always everyone's 3rd tier backup plans so unless I fursuit all the time I never see anyone
