There are numerous reasons why Trump and his government’s pervasive blathering about turning Canada into the “51st state” shouldn’t be dismissed as a “Madman Theory”-negotiating tactic, or as performative MAGA trolling. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Today we had an (excellent) newsletter arranged, with me taking a day off. But I was so angered by Trump's shameful betrayal of Ukraine that I wrote a short plea that we all do what we can to oppose and reverse it. It will be difficult. But I think we need to try.

Putin invaded Ukraine because he believed that NATO was weak, that his efforts to regain control of Ukraine by other means had failed, and that installing a pro-Russian government in Kyiv would be safe and easy.

Every allied country needs to:

1. Quietly limit tangible intelligence sharing with the US.
2. Divest from US imports and find trade alternatives.
3. Deny US IP and reproduce homegrown weapons systems (I.e. aircraft, AA, HIMARS).
4. Take maritime control, create new global defence naval force.
