Top view of a special Halloween decoration that's been in my family now for many months. Close examination reveals that there are several outstanding inches in its height and more than a few good-looking centimeters in its width. In fact, I'd be tempted to marry it if that sort of thing was legal in my state. As it is, well, if living in sin was good enough for my mother and her favorite ceramic Christmas elf, it's good enough for me!

Personally, I like to cover my gourds with chocolate syrup, lick off the chocolate syrup, then throw the gourd away. :-)

No - the gong is actually in my bathroom. I just have *really* bad aim when it comes to getting a spoon into a cup.

Maybe I'll try a fork tomorrow....

Metal gong. Although it's only 5" in diameter, striking it once sure scares the hell out of the pigeons. (Not that I ever intend to do that, mind you. I just sometimes miss the cup when I grab a spoon and try to stir my coffee in the morning.)

A bottom view of the plastic, battery-powered, pumpkin orange votive candle that I posted about 12 hours ago. Remarkably, it, too, is about 1.5" in diameter. (It's things like this that make me suspect that reality has no imagination. But then I remember the giraffe!)

Top view of a plastic, battery-powered, pumpkin orange votive candle. 1.5" in diameter. Just like the ones the pioneers used (except theirs weren't plastic, battery-powered, or pumpkin orange). Like all high-class faux candles, this one comes complete with an artificial flicker. I have at least 12 now, with no real use for any of them - which means they fit right in with about 90% of the other things I own.

Top view of an 8 ounce can of Rust-Oleum paint. They call it American Accents Colonial Red. Latex. Smooth satin finish. Just a tad under 3" in diameter. Why not 3" exactly? WHY? I do not know. I *can* tell you that I once used it to paint a pair of wooden patio chairs I have. AND the small side table that goes with them. It must be good stuff because I haven't had to paint them again since - and it's been YEARS. I wish I could find a toothpaste that worked like that!

A gourd. It measures about 2.25" in diameter and weighs about 1.8 ounces. Wikipedia tells me that gourds might have been domesticated as long ago as 10,000 BC but I don't think mine is even half that old. I kinda wish I had been around in 10,001 BC just to see the wild gourds roaming the American plains in their untamed herds of thousands. At least they didn't end up being hunted to the brink of extinction like the rotary dial telephone.

Yes, I do have vague memories of the day I arrived at school and a power failure had left the hallways dark. Lots of interesting discoveries when the lights suddenly came back on!

One end of a Philips 40-watt F40T12 cool white fluorescent tube. It's about 48" long. I use it in my garage shop light. It seems pretty old-fashioned now that LED lights have come along but back in the day the glow of these tubes seemed quite futuristic and unearthly to me. Now I wonder if I would have done better in school had my classrooms been illuminated by calmer incandescent lights. But then I also sometimes wonder if I could have done worse had there been no lights at all . . . .

Wagon wheel herb garden. The wheel is made of cedar and measures 32" in diameter. It weighs about 9 pounds. I like to imagine that it was left in my yard by a wagon train carrying settlers to the west in the 1800s but I'm afraid it was made in China a few years ago by children working 12 hours a day for almost no pay. Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Perhaps I'll only know for sure if a settler or a Chinese child knocks on my door and asks for it back . . . .
