McCormick notes, "the most boisterous day we have as yet experienced here," adding that the weather made it impossible for the ships to communicate with the shore.

14 October 1842: On Terror, cans of preserved meats and preserved vegetables are found to be stinking and unfit for use, and are thrown overboard.
13 October 1842: The crews are cutting timber for firewood and spars.
Soap and tobacco are issued to Terror's crew.
On Erebus, one pint of preserved vegetable soup and one and a quarter pints of concentrated soup are condemned as unfit for use and thrown overboard.
12 October 1842: McCormick walks out to Cape Spencer, where he finds himself on "the southernmost extremity of the vast continent of America" besides Cape Horn itself. He leaves behind a pile of ammunition and a button from his jacket as a mark of his visit.
