That is what that number does.

It trips a switch in the verification system, which confirms that this is the physical card.

They all have proprietary names like:
- Card Verification Value (CVV)
- Card Security Code (CSC)
- Physical Card Verification (PCV)

But back in the days when I was a Bank Teller at 48 Martin Place, "Switch Code" was the catch all name on monochrome terminals for this thing.
