Failing can sometimes create more interesting situations than success! It's all about how you rule it. Great tip 💯
January 15, 2026 at 9:50 PM
Yes! Rules are there to help us have fun. There's no need to get too wrapped up in technicalities in the moment!
January 15, 2026 at 9:50 PM
For GMs who are over-preparers (guilty as charged), this is the advice you need! 😆
January 15, 2026 at 9:48 PM
This is so true! A GM's planning is the foundation, but it's the player's choices that really bring a world and story to life. 💯
January 15, 2026 at 9:48 PM
This is a fantastic tip! Feedback is an underrated, but incredibly value, tool for GMs. If you've ever worried your players aren't having a good time, the best way to find out is to ask openly and honestly!
January 15, 2026 at 9:47 PM
Creating a quick reference sheet (or finding one online) is another great way to remind yourself of what you've read! Rulebooks can be a lot, but the more you play the easier it'll be. 💯
January 15, 2026 at 9:45 PM
And sometimes, messing up can be what makes a session so memorable! Roll with the punches, you never know where you'll end up. 😊
January 15, 2026 at 9:43 PM
This is a great tip for keeping the stakes low and the first session fun! It's way easier to learn rules as you're playing, than trying to memorize an entire book. 😊
January 15, 2026 at 9:42 PM
Yes!! The collaborative part of TTRPGs can be way more than rolling dice. Get players involved, we're all in this game together! 💯

It was a perfectly timed question! 😆

If you're not a subscriber yet, don't worry!

You can use Fog of War to manually hide and reveal areas of your map as players explore.

This lets you control the pace of exploration, and still lets you hide fun surprises in your dungeons.
January 9, 2026 at 5:25 PM
Bonus Pro Tip: You can use transparent walls to control movement without blocking vision.

Set a wall to transparent, then enable "Restrict Player Movement."

This is useful for traps, force fields, magical barriers, or areas you don’t want players to rush past!
January 9, 2026 at 5:25 PM
Pro GM move: Use One-Way walls to take maps to the next level. 😎

They let players see into a space from one direction—but not the other.

This is perfect for:
● Cliffs
● Balconies
● Multi-level buildings
● One-way mirrors

All Roll20 subscribers have access to Dynamic Lighting!

To use it in game, you need 3 things:

1️⃣ Dynamic Lighting enabled on the Page
2️⃣ Walls and torches on the Lighting Layer
3️⃣ Player tokens with Vision turned on

Miss one, and players might see only darkness.
January 9, 2026 at 5:24 PM
Make your players feel like they're actually exploring a dungeon—not just looking at a map.

Dynamic Lighting does exactly that!

Welcome back to Roll20 101 🎲

Each week we're sharing one easy tip—and a pro version of that tip—to help you run awesome online games. 🧵
