Pat Porter won his 7th consecutive U.S Cross Country title in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Porter used a late surge to pull away from the field, running 31:07. Future Olympic marathoner Bob Kempainen was 2nd in 31:20. Tim Hacker was 4th and Mark Coogan 9th.
