I’m on here!
Some highlights from our first session of Fossil Prep Methods camps last month! Among other projects, students had a chance to work on a mostly complete Pachyrhizodus fish fossil! Yours of the Sternberg Museum’s collections as well as lessons on molding and casting were also included.

The haematite cement is what gives the sandstone and the church its red colour.

It also has the industrial property of being used in steel and iron production.

It can come in a variety of colours such as black, brown and red with reddish brown being the colour here.

Haematite also often occurs as a cement in sedimentary rocks such as red desert sandstone, which for those of you in Newport 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, birth place of ROTD, is what the church is made of.

Haematite has lots of different crystal habits (essentially ways the crystals can grow) and this example we have here is also called kidney ore. Cause if you really squint it kinda looks like a kidney. And unfortunately I do not know what makes it form like that.

Haematite

One rock commonly used as iron ore, Haematite. Fe2O3 aka classic iron oxide.

This used to be part 2 of an iron ore series but I can’t find the other part, so oh well.
