I've begun the 2nd book in my stupid little series, because I was stuck on the first one. Some chapter titles:

The High Priests

The Time of Monsters

The Paper Daughters

At the Crossroads

The Box in the Mountains

They Who Dream Alone

A Savage Place

The Struggle of Nations

The Dust of Empire
Bolsanero is rotten as hell and deserves everything he got. Trump, as usual, loves dictators and hates democracy.

There’s a lot of better ones that I will keep for myself because they are too personal, but I did audibly squee in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when he went super. I couldn’t contain myself, even if it unfortunately wasn’t based on the superior-to-the-games Archie comics.

What’s a non-superhero comic that should be adapted into a show or a movie?

I’ll start: Eisner’s A Contract with God and the sequels are almost perfectly designed for a limited series.

This is an interesting look at post-Dutch Indonesia, and a lesson that revolutionaries don’t always make for better leaders. It’s also a crash course in the fact that southeast Asians have the best goddamn hair on the planet. I have pretty good hair and I was still jealous.

With the MCU and Star Wars on a box office decline, and having seen the receipts for this and Lilo & Stitch, you’d think Disney would learn some kind of lesson about what sells. Maybe a company that makes a billion dollar AI deal isn’t actually that smart.

Together with Sketch, this seems to further my supposition that Angel wants to be taken seriously by the film community, and not just dismissed as merely a faith-based studio.

I can’t remember the last time a Spielberg movie actually had hype, or a big ad campaign beyond just posters and trailers. Maybe Lincoln? The work’s been good, but he hasn’t had an event film in some time. It would be nice to see him rejoin Del Toro and Nolan in that camp.

In one respect, Bluesky is no different from Twitter: users on both apps don’t like nuance. You can post detailed 300-character treatises on the state of French cinema in the 70s and get crickets, while someone else posts “repost if you like dogs!” and gets 6,897 reposts and 300 comments.

From a purely practical standpoint, I hope there’s some kind of streaming separation between Max and Netflix. HBO has a highly curated selection of classic movies from every era, and I don’t want to have to sift through Netflix’s slop to find it.

No Extraction 3: Extract Me Harder here, thanks.

The Night Porter
Emilia Perez
Boondock Saints
Eraserhead
The Rise of Skywalker

My reaction to these “films” ranged from moral outrage to bemusement to “what the fuck is this shit”. Almost everyone involved with them should be barred from the profession (Lynch saved himself with Lost Highway).
Never mind movies you’ve watched multiple times, name a movie you’ve watched once and would never watch again.

Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian. I strongly feel it suits this moment.
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

Reading the essay that came with my copy of The Third Man, I learn that it resulted in a radio show with Welles’ Lime as the protagonist, and that this show in turn produced Mr. Arkadin, title character of another great film.

Also learned that Welles was an ass, but I knew that.
