It's frustrating how Russia has built this entire myth of invincibility around itself. It lost the Crimean war, a war with Japan in 1905, the first world war, an invasion of Poland in 1920, and in Afghanistan. It won the second world war only with Allied logistical support.

Brazil, Morocco and a no-hoper team from a mountainous, divided island of white sand beaches whose inhabitants speak a pidgin of their colonial master’s tongue.

Haiti are of course the other team in group C

There’s some weird law of the universe that takes over and Scotland always has to play Brazil.
Even I notice it and I have spent a lifetime knowing nothing about football

I had forgotten just how confident men can be in their pronouncements that are often utter nonsense.
It’s good to be reminded. Well done that man.

This is really fascinating especially the tiny bit about the establishment’s fascination with the exotic and that exotic changing fashion. So the orientalism of the Brighton Pavillion becomes Balmoral Castle.

Someone up from England who wanted to rewild the place.
I'm going with either the Ark of the Covenant or a Betamax VCR.

Keep in mind that given the intense/widespread opposition in Ukr to the "little Ru" conception, if Ru managed to conquer Ukr, it will intensify the genocidal policies it now pursues in the occupied territories to achieve this "transformation". Ru openly talk about killing millions if necessary.

What was true of the Trump administration's original, extortionate minerals plan is equally true of this peace plan. It will probably be true of the next White House plan, and the one after that.
To repeat: the Trump administration peace deal was always a deal for peace between Russia and the US, not Russia and Ukraine. In it, it seems, the US gets Ukraine's resources, Russia gets Ukraine's land, and Ukraine gets to say thank you.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

The more of us reading Françoise Gilot’s book on Picasso as a way to truly understand this the better.
I think we can all agree that you can publish a game-changing bit of science (especially if you have more than a bit of help with the tricky crystal structures) but also be a massive fucking prick. We contain multitudes, yeah?

I have been out at an event full of young people and I am here to inform you that moustaches are back. Some are a throwback to the heyday of Magnum PI and sadly others, the height of Vichy France.

(You all may know this but I might as well live in a cave in Assynt for all the street life I see)
