We're talking about us, the people, depending on two companies that act as the single gateway for software to reach our phones. These companies just went ahead and bent the knee to Trump & Co, and did their bidding.

No court order. Not even a formal complaint.

We need journalism that *interprets* these facts, explains what it means.

Facts and objectivism are fine when reporting on the weather. But we're talking about the removal of software that people used to avoid Gestapo from kidnapping them, and it didn't even take a court order to get it done.

So Apple is censoring another ICE-spotting app, and I think we need to talk about the coverage, as much as Apple's groveling pre-compliance.

@404media.co broke this, specifically @josephcox.bsky.social, and unlike some previous coverage, it includes this:

99+% of the tech press, and basically all of the commentariat, reflexively applies the Apple vs. Google horse-race frame to these App Store takedown stories, and y'all are telling on yourselves.

I believe it's fundamentally impossible to ship Chrome on iOS meeting the same high quality bar we have on other platforms when we are forced to rely on WKWebView and very slow and unreliable issue handling.
So this sounds like yet another Notifications API (sub)feature that got a green checkmark in MDN because someone at Safari said it works without checking if it actually does?

How did we end up in a place where we have to correct their work, exactly?? 🙄
