I’m recruiting a PhD and MSC student for fall 2026 working on the movement ecology and conservation of Mexican spotted owls in SW forests and rocky canyonlands. Exciting partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Great vibrant lab group, high impact research! 🦉

When you're faced with an emergency like a wildfire, where do you turn for information?

As of today, everyone across 50 U.S. states can now rely on Watch Duty: Simple, clear, actionable alerts backed by a powerhouse team that combines cutting-edge technology with nonstop human monitoring.

So sorry to hear this. I initially found your work through a web search on slime molds, and know I wouldn't be able to successfully search + find the same thing today

Wildlife tracking! I'm reposting things I made this past year. If you look closely at the deer tracks you'll see I added the hint that they're double registering (hind foot is stepping into the same spot as front foot).

This is so cool! I really enjoyed the paper's specific highlighting of savannah indicator species in these historical and cultural contexts

Our timely study set in western India, which utilizes #indigenous traditional literature dating back to 750yrs, provides 1 such line of evidence. Contradicting t popular notion of a forested-past, historical nature descriptions revealed a major% of plants typical of savannas. 5/n

New paper out today in Ecology Letters! In this synthesis we dive into the equilibrium assumption in ecology - why it's everywhere in ecological theory, the evidence for it in nature, when meeting the assumption is important, how to achieve it in empirical research, and more! tinyurl.com/yh6kyysm

Was reminded on a beautiful trip to the Klamath River today how intensely we would love to collaborate with folks studying pollinators in this space. Amazing restoration of the reservoirs with so much going on. N CA and OR pollinator peeps, we have veg data and would love to chat!

Consistent with our findings in west side sierra where shrubs impacts on pine and fir seedlings depended on how hot the year was!

Reposted by Chhaya M. Werner

Turns out that planted Jeffrey pine seedlings in the eastern Sierra have higher survival under shrubs than in the open.

Most foresters will tell you that shrubs are detrimental, but most of that data come from more productive, western slope sites where shrubs get much bigger 🤔

Maybe it was a 12" increment borer
