I know everything is crappy and we’re all tired and no one has much money left, but if we’re learning anything right now, it’s that we need independent journalists. I co-run a profit-sharing podcast network with some journalism, some silly stuff, some true crime. If you can spare it…

Yeah; that’s it. 2025 is irredeemable.

Thing is, I’ve lost the skill set. I only recently memorized my partner’s phone number and we’ve been together over two years. Meanwhile, I easily remember my childhood phone number from 35 years ago.

Except the area code. We never needed to know it.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

There have been brave & courageous war correspondents & reporters throughout history who have uncovered fraud, corruption, abuses and worse inside DOD and the military industrial complex over decades.

Then you have useless hacks that would sign on to Hegseth’s censorship rules.

I can say quite confidently as a GenX-er, I don’t hate it at all.

I just don't see how this will benefit them in the long run. That Marine has Marine friends--ones who likely lean right but respect the sacrifices he's made to serve his country. So this will likely turn some people in his orbit against this admin. This keeps happening, that discontent will spread.

And if you subscribe at Grab Bag Collab (www.grabbagcollab.com) or via Apple Podcasts, you get bonus content each week. This time, I talk about why the Jeffrey Lundgren case was one of the most emotionally draining I've covered and how I decide which cases need two episodes to properly explore.

And today, I drop Part 2 of the Kirtland cult murders. After claiming God told him to spare the temple, Jeffrey Lundgren turned his so-called prophecy toward a new target: his own followers. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c...

Last week on Crimes of the Centuries, I dove into Part 1 of one of the strangest stories to come out of Ohio — and that’s saying something. Jeffrey Lundgren wasn't your average church tour guide. Behind the scenes, he was twisting sculpture into something deadly.

That’s a good, comforting point. Every time I see the masks, I worry about accountability. I forgot my own training as a journalist: follow the money.

There will be a paper trail.

Whoa. "Law enforcement".
You guys aren't getting paid in benjamins, right?

You're paid by PAPER TRAIL.
Useful for your PROPER TRIAL!

As a (former) crime statistician, I can attest to the fact that crimes committed by undocumented persons barely make a blip on the radar. And yet, here we are.
reporteramber.bsky.social
I’ve covered crime for 30 years. Of the thousands of stories I’ve covered, I can probably count on one hand the number of crimes I’ve written about that were committed by undocumented immigrants. Yet this administration deems the problem so out of hand they use it to justify this level of cruelty.

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.

There's just no words for the uselessness of this cruelty.

Adelita Grijalva won her election fair and square.

Now House Speaker Mike Johnson is refusing to swear her in because she would be the final signature to release the Epstein files.

Mr. Speaker, respect democracy. Obey the law. Swear Representative Grijalva in immediately.

I'll start

NO because that's not actually a thing anywhere

Donald Trump is calling for the jailing of his political opponents in Chicago. His DOJ lackeys have already indicted a NJ Congresswoman for conducting ICE facility oversight and James Comey. John Bolton's house was raided.

We must treat these latest threats seriously and all stand up against them.

To put it another way, I have represented thousands of people. I cannot think of a single instance in which the initial police report was entirely correct. Not one.

Journalists, please stop copying them down as if they were. Or at least give context re credibility!

Whether you're a casual news reader or a breaking news reporter at the NYTimes, I implore you--please, please, please--do not believe or report DHS/ICE/CBP's side of events uncritically. End the state's monopoly on legitimate storytelling. They are not the objective arbiter of what really happened.
