CHICAGO, IL (August 18, 2025) - State Representative Christina Morales (D-Houston) issued the following statement: “When Texas House Democrats first left the state, I was clear - I am in this fight for the long run and am committed to using every tool at our disposal to fight the ‘gerrymandering on steroids.’ That has not changed.

I represent communities that these racist maps are targeting — historic Latino neighborhoods like Lindale Park, Magnolia Park, Near Northside, Park Place, and the East End. Our Black and Brown communities — my community — are being chopped apart to silence our voices and hand power to Donald Trump. I will not be complicit in this rigged redistricting scheme.

Today, some of my colleagues chose to return to the House Floor. I respect them deeply, but that choice would not reflect my commitment to the people I represent. My community sent me here to fight for fair representation, and I will continue to do so from outside the Capitol.

I will stand firm against these illegal, racially discriminatory maps in the courts, in our communities, and at the ballot box. Because our neighborhoods, our voices, and our democracy are worth defending — and I will not yield.”
