Transparency is a powerful way to undermine political grooming
🧵A win for political and transparency in Europe – and Reform Political Advertising.

When we launched Reform Political Advertising, we proposed the idea of an independent, public repository for political ads.
The momentum to increase the transparency around election advertising is also starting to show some promise in the UK:

- Wales is developing theWelsh Elections Information Platform, a promising transparency tool we’ll be engaging with as it evolves
It’s a significant step forward in solving the problem of “dark advertising” – a tactic that came into the spotlight during the Brexit referendum and continues to challenge transparency in online campaigning.
rom March 2026, the EU will launch a centralised repository for political ads, with metadata, targeting info, API access, and authentication protocols. eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-conten... (see para 64).

We made this case to the UK's Disinformation & “Fake News” Committee and we were pleased when our recommendation was included verbatim in their final report.

Due to recent EU regulation we are a bit belatedly posting that we are seeing that vision come to life across Europe.

We’ve prominent coverage in John Johnston’s excellent Politico Influence newsletter this week.

We are pointing out how it is essential that the government’s efforts to counter disinformation include misleading factual claims in election ads (if that isn’t self evident enough).

Thanks to John Johnston for our mention in the excellent Influence newsletter this week on why the government’s updating of election rules is a good step forward … but we’ve an “oven ready” suggestion for their proposed campaign code.
