On this Indigenous Peoples Day, Fruities would like to share about the indigenous concept of "two-spirit" and highlight indigenous members of our team! Today is a great day to support indigenous business, read stories from indigenous people, and engage with indigenous content creators.
Information poster with text:
Honoring Indigenous Peoples' Day
Indigenous Peoples' Day is a holiday in the United States that celebrates and honors Indigenous people and commemorates their histories and cultures.
Indigenous people and LGBTQ+ history
Historically, LGBTQ+ Native Americans used terms for gender-related social roles unique to their specific tribe and tribal language. For many tribes, people were historically defined more by their roles in relation to their partner and their tribe, and viewing people as simply male or female was an idea first introduced by colonists.
Two-spirit is an English term that emerged in 1990 to describe Indigenous North Americans who fulfill one of many mixed gender roles found traditionally among indgenous groups. Male and female Two-Spirits have been documented in over 130 tribes, in every region of North America.
Two-Spirits have had distinct gender and social roles in their tribes.
They could have been:
Healers
Special role players in sundance or other ceremonies
Medicine persons
Convyers of oral traiditions
Name givers
Caregivers for orphaned children
