I feel like introducing $$ into this system is super problematic but what do you do? It takes a lot of time to do these letters well, which we all know.
rebeccapscales.bsky.social
exactly. and I question the ethics and judgment of anyone who would do otherwise. But this where we are I guess.

I just keep thinking about how we KNOW these things reproduce racial & gender stereotypes. So you're gonna use one to write a T&P letter for a colleague who is a woman? her a person of color? FFS
rebeccapscales.bsky.social
exactly. And putting confidential information into an LLM also seems wildly problematic, even if people say they are using it only to summarize published work.

I sat in a meeting the other day where full profs & deans in some disciplines insisted there was nothing they could do if faculty wrote internal or external T&P letters with AI. The only people who objected to this were humanists.

If you are appalled by the audacity of people using AI to grade student work, I recently overheard someone professing that "there is nothing to be done" if faculty are using AI to write T&P letters

I strongly urge everyone to not just read this warning from @marcwatkins.bsky.social, but heed it, and be vocal and forceful pushing back against using AI to grade student writing. This must be anathema if we're going to have a world where learning means something. substack.com/inbox/post/1...

The palpable relief of reading a syntactically awkward student paper nevertheless brimming with ideas they’re trying on after having to consume the stale cardboard generalities of a Chat GPT essay.

it's the pervasive anxiety - feeling constantly nauseous and sick -- that is doing me in

I am reading all the papers now and they are pretty good; happy to report someone also named you "Robert."

my institution offered a buyout to every tenured faculty member 55 and older last year (1 yr salary in exchange for leaving in May). Now we are being reorganized to save $$ on staff appointments and faculty admin compensation. It's coming for us all!

I'm not really sure I read the description of the project in the same way. But I guess that's called interpretation.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I was just there this morning. This is the block. Nothing is on fire. There is no destruction. There is no War Zone. We were out for a 22-mile bike ride on a beautiful Sunday morning. Our biggest obstacle was repeatedly encountering the ongoing PDX marathon route.
Three cyclists in front of Portland ICE headquarters on a beautiful sunny day. Empty street. Nothing going on.

The Chronicle has actually been hostile to supporting universities' real mission of teaching and learning for some time. It's a publication that exists to support the managerial class whose inflated salaries steal our budgets
