Ok so I've got a lot of new academic followers and I need to warn you that my feed is about 15% academic stuff and 85% dogs, cats and bread making. I also like to see what people are knitting/crocheting. So basically I like knowing other academics but mostly for the non-academic stuff you post!
My wife has just broken the sellotape dispenser before any presents have been wrapped so I am afraid Christmas is cancelled

Meal out (in a private room 😷) with my father-in-law for his 90th. Send good thoughts, this has the potential to be hard 😬

Today on #BeckyFM is I Want to Know What Love Is by Foreigner (apparently, I had to look it up).

Interesting choice for whatever part of my brain decides this, as I can't remember the last time I heard it. Also I've just got the one line on repeat because I don't actually know the rest of the song.

How is it possible that every hospital I am under uses a different electronic platform to send letters, test results etc? Surely the NHS should just decide on a platform and everybody runs with it? No?

Has anybody bought a tumble dryer recently and thought "wow I really like this tumble dryer that did not cost me more than, say, £400"?

Because if so I need your tumble dryer recommendations as ours has decided 15 years is enough years.

Agatha is being spayed in Dec so we've just bought some surgery suits so we can get her used to them. Day 1 was interesting... She ran around like a demon released from hell for about ten minutes and then after we took it off was v.subdued. Feel bad but don't think she'd like the cone alternative!

I know you're not meant to judge, but I saw her running laps round the lounge earlier so I don't think she really needs that wheelchair 😅

Ok so made it to the opticians which is a good thing as a) my prescription is wrong so they're remaking my glasses but also b) they think I may have inflammation in one of my nerves so I'm being referred to the hospital. (Have no idea what that could be about, trying not to panic!)
Spent most of today feeling rubbish from a mast cell reaction and tomorrow I have to drag myself to the opticians for a re-test as my new glasses are very much not right. And I'm tired and it's cold and I just don't want to leave the house 😂

WTAF, I've just had an email from Facebook saying my account has been suspended for violating "Community Standards on cybersecurity". I've appealed but I literally have no idea what I'm meant to have done!? I'll be pissed off if I lose access as there's a lot of friends & memories on there.

Oh good lord my cat photo from yesterday has escaped my corner of the internet and it's A Lot.

I feel like I might be too tired for Christmas? Everyone seems to have their tree up and I'm still surrounded by Halloween decor and up to my eyes in Christmas lists and just generally am wondering how one turns this all around in time 🙈😂

Book 44 of 2025

Vera Wong's Guide to Snooping (On a Dead Man) by Jesse Sutanto
Started: 09/11/25
Finished: 16/11/25
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5

I absolutely love Vera & was so glad when the author wrote a sequel as the 1st book was meant to be standalone. This was everything I'd hoped for, I hope there's more!

If we don’t signal our virtue every now and again - then so many believe they are utterly alone - “virtue signalling” is not there to say “aren’t I good” but “there are more of us than you might imagine” and “fuck you for demanding that only the brutal and the bullies may speak”

Accidentally went to church in too many layers and nearly passed out. (In my defence who expects a Victorian building in November to be well-heated; this is not a common phenomenon in the Church of England! 😆)

I know dunnocks are generally ground feeders but do they go in trees/on bird tables too? We have a small brown bird that keeps showing up but this morning was going into the tree and onto the bird table. Not a sparrow. If they don't, what could it be?

All vehicles should be limited to 80mph (excluding emergency vehicles obviously). There's no reason for anyone to be doing more than that, it would be easy to implement and it would save a lot of lives.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

Oh frabjous day; there's a sticker inside with the serial number on it 😃 Also I've spent a long time defrosting the sodding thing with a hairdryer (felt like one of those H&S videos where you have to say all the things they're doing that are unsafe) so lunch is via Uber Eats.
Defrosting the freezer (always a joy). One of the drawers is cracked and needs replacing there is no brand or model number on the 3 sides we can get at and pulling it out is not easy. So that'll be duct tape I guess!

Follow-up:

Me: Sweetie... Did *I* leave eight Yorkshire puddings on the draining board!?

Wife: No, that was me!

There's no hope for this house.
This afternoon I found a teaspoon in my cardigan pocket. I have no idea when this occurred or what possible reason I can have had for doing that but I guess it made sense at the time?
