Poetry today by E. A. Midnight

“how much of love is seeing
someone else’s mental illness as a quirk / and not failure, not a dent, not
something that must be fixed”

Working in and for NDN Country is hard and devastating in the best and worst ways. You have to be in it for the people, you have to love the people for ALL of who they were, who they are and who they can and dream to be.
Screenshot of a page in a book that read:

"But I choose to love you like an Indian
Because desperate love runs deep in our veins And they understand that.
Even if they don't understand us
This is home
And they respect our love
And our willingness to die for our love
Like our ancestors before us
Where the warriors set up war camps far away from the village so
that the carnage never
Touches the family
And they could die alone if there was dying to be done.
But the community could go on.
And as long as they understand that
We'll never have to worry."

Mens Rea

A mental Post-it note,
Inscribes "Rules optional."
A sly and abstract rote.

Winks, smirks, and polite coughs,
When morals are not seen,
The brain behind them scoffs.

“If you’re interested in the art of life writing, then one of your jobs is to continue to make your life new—to tell your life through the lens of the color blue, or the shadow of a murder in your family, or mouth pain.” —Maggie Nelson

Right-wing censors are now "quiet banning" books that they can't removed legally.

Librarians in Chicago have been finding books dealing with race, LGBTQ+ issues or Islam hidden under shelves, in trash cans or otherwise "disappeared."

Lake County library leaders expect to see more challenged books
A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, according to the American Library Association. Challenges lead to censorship.
