Had a warm return to Rikkyo University, Tokyo, this summer on a Daiwa Foundation grant, this time looking at images of asteroid Bennu captured by the Laboratory OROCHI Simulator in prep for MMX

On the way back from EGU I stopped by the Ries Crater and helped out with some AUPE (Aberystwyth University PanCam Emulator) image processing with the Canadian and UK space agencies. We took a lot of pictures of pre- and post-impact clays in prep for ExoMars Rosalind Franklin

Back in May I cycled to EGU in Vienna, and gave a talk about the Supervised Spectral Parameter Learning method we've been developing, and have been applying to the CaSSIS multi-band imager on the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter

Got to play some city pop on the Brilliant Corners soundsystem last week. First time publicly djing for a long while, and first time on turntables!

pov you take a break from the Martian solstice party to go see Deimos before the sun comes up
No AI, this is a real photo taken by Percy’s engineering cameras of astronomical twilight on #Mars! You can see Deimos in the sky too.

I worked pretty hard to plan, execute, and analyze this image, and it came out beautifully! A bit noisy, but it was very dark out after all.

Day 11 of cycling London-> Vienna for EGU2925: the last day! Grateful for blue skies this morning. Took a side quest finding breakfast by the abbey at Melk, didn’t hit the road till noon and ran straight into a mighty headwind. Last few ks into Vienna were in land and got the speed back. I made it!

Day 10 of cycling London->Vienna for EGU2025: rain all day from Linz to Melk. Found an old warm lunch stop in Grein, and the owner told me I need to go back up river to the bridge and take the south bank. Was a good move - nice views of the built up north bank I was avoiding. 🤞 for ⛅️ 🚲 into Vienna

Day 9 of cycling London->Vienna for EGU2025: rain to start the day and sodden gravel. Got drier towards Obernzell where I caught a ferry across the river into Austria. Big valley walls of forest either side, and the track followed the waters edge. Very gradual downslope most of the way down to Linz

Day 8 of cycling to EGU2025 Vienna from London: Day 1/4 of the Danube - the last stretch! Skipped from Mainz to lovely Regensburg by train on my off day. 20C no wind and super smooth eurovelo 6 track, but it’s mostly inside the banks so not much view of the big blue. Played Joni’s Blue all the way.

Day 7 of cycling to EGU2025 Vienna from London: The wind either blows up the Rhine or down it, and it was against me all day. When it wasn’t windy it was raining. Things turned up after turning the corner at Bingen, crossing over the crop fields. Entered Mainz via a fairground around 1730.

Day 6 of cycling London->Vienna for EGU2025: After a day off in Cologne it was time for my buddy to catch the train home, and I pressed on down the Rhine to Koblenz on Easter Sunday. The river path was packed with cyclist enjoying the good weather away from traffic - barely touched a road all day.

Day 5 of cycling from London to Vienna for EGU2025: perhaps the best ride yet, out and over the hills where the pros were getting ready for the Amstel Gold Race. The sun came out over the rolling fields, and there were lots of long straight descending cycle paths for good speed into Cologne.

Day 4 of cycling from London -> Vienna for EGU2025: after a rest day in Antwerp, a cold and grey start getting out of the city, then nice canal side riding before the rain set in and the path merged with the roads. Some relief through some kind of national park. Slid into Maastricht at around 1830

Day 3 of cycle to EGU 2025 London -> Vienna: Hit the cycle superhighways connecting Bruges -> Ghent -> Antwerp. Refined our aero drafting against the southeasterly headwind blowing in across the fields. Managed to cover our 100 km in about 4 hours of riding time. Ate a lot of sugars.

Day 2 of cycling London to EGU 2025 Vienna: calm seas for the Dover -> Calais ferry crossing. Flat roads through Dunkirk and into Belgium and another flat tire on the other bike this time. Beautiful evening through luxury woodland suburbs and into Bruges for 1900.

Day 1 of cycle to EGU2025 London -> Vienna. Had a nice stop in Rochester by the castle. Went through 2 tubes outside Canterbury. Rolled over the hills in the quiet early evening and down to the sea.

Last week the cherry trees bloomed all over the parks I cycle home through, and I’ve been playing Neneh Cherry with Hiroshi Fujiwara and Dylan’s version of wild mountain thyme from the Isle of Wight show

Did the big ol’ London->Brighton cycle for the first time this fine spring day. That Ditchling Hill is something, reckon MSSL is somewhere along those north downs on the horizon.
