the cumulative cultural effect of video essays is that a lot of otherwise-niche discussion topics get dominated by globs of people who all know the same slice of information and will never learn anything else about the subject

Like no I don’t think people mentioning these pieces are just flaunting their avant-garde credentials inherently. I’d be hypocritical if I was complaining about pretentious artsy people. But when the only pieces they ever seem to mention are the ones with video essays I get suspicious.
