A surprisingly common element of most games in the on-going indie farmsim boom. Just little-to-no recognizable "Protagonist" characters in favor of customization. Leaves Pete standing alone for "iconic" status.

He's also in 6 of the nearly 20 SoS-related games on Switch alone, so that's somethin'.

It feels waaaay overdue. As this image shows, there's been some form of demand for Story of Seasons in Smash for about 23 years, and the series itself has always been associated with Nintendo and has become very influential in the medium.

Surely enough to earn a spot by now.

Remembering this old Smash image. I think I recall seeing it first posted in a GameFAQs thread, and love when it pops up somewhere. Partially because it's such a SPECIFIC time capsule for 2002, with AWL having only first been announced late May, so it's using the StH protagonist. More in alt text.

On top of the 26 characters actually in the game is a random grab-bag assortment from the perspective of someone who could probably say "I only really play the major Nintendo games and don't know much else."

Of particular interest for a Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon-focused community, the protagonist of Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland is near the end of the second row. Named "Jack," because that's what the fanon (and Nintendo Power!) had decided to call him in absence of a readily available official name in most English media. AWL would only be revealed during E3 in late May of 2002, putting the image in a veeeery specific time-frame for StH's protagonist to be the only "PS2" character here.

The hypothetical roster mostly uses crusty-ass JPEGs of various characters from the then current and upcoming major releases for the Gamecube, and also leans heavily on Nintendo 64 characters and an assortment of characters present in Melee's collectible trophies. Notable exceptions to this 64/GC/Trophy-focus include Raichu (spelled "Riachu") and, of all the Zelda characters to make sure to include, Sahasrahla. There's many extremely niche choices, like Taj and Wizpig, and I'd be kind of shocked if a casual Banjo fan of the modern era would call out Brenty as a choice for literally anything. "Super Giga Tera Koopa" as a character that did not exist also stands out. They did manage to call out 8-player Smash long before that was a thing in the series, though.

Further enforcing the image's time capsule nature is the various non-video game characters, such as Spider-Man specifically from the 2002 film.

There is no Geno. There is no Goku. The only Golden Sun character is Mia for some reason. An image that could never, ever have been produced in the modern day, or by any other mind. A captured moment in time.
