The 50's ~
Murray Skynard, whose Little Eagle Press prints the Port Arend Achiever, zips toward his back door. He's seen McCarthyite Mrs. Brumsfeld coming out the front. She says he leans so far left he shouldn't even be able to ride a 2-wheeler.

Mona of Algoma ~
Seems every time I go to Algoma (Wisconsin) I find something I want to photograph. I love this. Wish I could credit the artist here, but I just don't know. If you do, please leave a comment.

How do they do it? And why?

School*
*A facility where small fish (I.E. sardines) are taught to conform and, ultimately, to swim happily into cans, where they celebrate their uniformity.

Gone Goose ~
What is it in me that refuses to fly with the flock, to accept conventional wisdom, to do what's "right"?
O, when will . . . I . . . ever learn?

And I vowed to never give a heart to a cat photo. Oh well, it's not the first vow I've broken.

Being a great Franz Kline fan since my art school days in the early 60's, I just gotta love these abstracts of yours. Keep 'em coming.

A thin red thread, saying something about slender hope, saying something about hanging on, the winter coming.

Your point is a good one, but furthers a misconception: when I visited Argentina, expecting to see lots of brown-skinned people, to my surprise I found it was as white a place as I've ever been. I don't know about Israel.

Tug. Heartstrings. (?)
Having had several near-death experiences while working on tugs, you'd think I'd hate 'em. Not so.
Stopped to do a 3-minute sketch of the old Corps of Engineers' "Ludington" today in Kewaunee.

Amazing, isn't it, that something so delicate as life itself should ever take hold in this cold and brutal universe?

Port Arend, October 1959
A few empty boxcars shuffle off toward tomorrow's work and a warm evening is coming down, as the Coasties tie up their 36' after assisting/standing by an excursion boat with carburetor problems. All back in, all O.K.

Weather in Port Arend is pretty hard on equipment -- the engine on Saturday and the same engine 48 hours later:

The Northwestern's running an engine through here now that we haven't seen before -- Alco #1069, built in 1953 according to the roster.

Watch that first step!
I keep finding these crazy buildings with exit doors at 2nd floor level. Perhaps for when the bullshit is running extra deep, like oh, let's say . . . Now.
I must admit that I do like the color, contrast & composition of this shot.

The saddest looking engine ever. Looks like it's about to break into tears and me along with it.

Better, I think. That lone, spindly tree just wasn't working for me, so I gave it some colorful company. For reference, that derelict boat is a 19 footer. (4-3/4")

Sweating the Small Stuff ~
Perhaps this is not the day I'll save the great, large world from The Big Orange Bastard, so I spent most of the afternoon working on a couple square inches of make-believe, much like a good German might have 85 years ago.
