recent games or shows give me a villain that could have so much sauce, but in the end these aliens or monsters are just Oppressed Too and the big bad can be solved by blowing up their oppressors in a team up. The question of character motivation - and the world building that comes after is lost.

There's something to be said about a story that introduces a promising antagonist but they end up either just being misunderstood or have to have moral justification for evil. It knocks the villainy away because more often than not it's less a character excuse for evil but a systemic one.

and there's nothing wrong with doing that, but like, when writers start catering to that crowd by filing the edges off the villains to make them merely edgy and not actually _bad_ so it's ~okay~ that the characters are into each other... we start to see an overall flattening of available stories

Yeah I really only started being in the fandom by just... Hanging out and seeing basketball furries. I was mostly there before, but never really had a community before then.

Honestly Starfinder is such a breath of fresh air in the ttrpg space. It's wacky but not lol random. It's more fun and Guardians of the Galaxy. My pathfinder game is chock full of fantasy realism, but my Starfinder is a bunch of slice of life with explosions.

I think in the modern day quotes written in that way invoke the imagery of that gif of, I think, Dr Evil? doing the exaggerated air quotes for mockery's sake.

Its unfortunate but one of those things modern day communication runs into obsoleting older definitions.

When I want a protag to relate to, it depends on the game. I think a voiced protag that is a character I made (like an mmo) needs to choices on how we express, otherwise I feel twice as miffed ("I disagree and I hate the protag, and that's supposed to be me!!"). Guild wars 2 does that to me a lot.

I will always have soft spots for any mod that adds a "niche" in the black mesa incident. I think one I liked was Xen, where you play as a vortigaunt (sp) and eventually break free from the Xen. Had a warm ending, too.

The high halls 'boss' arena near the Act 2 Macguffin that has a bench not too far? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?
