I'm growing to really dislike the trope where nobody tells the protagonist anything in the scary movie, then get mad when the protagonist does something that could've been easily avoided if they just knew the whole dang story. It's like the couple breaking up because of a misunderstanding. #horror

If I recall correctly that after the plague, there was no one left to take care of the work except for the lords and ladies. That's a generalization, but year. A disaster, a plague, etc. usually does the trick.

Honestly though, what exactly is the goal here and making everything expensive? If money isn't even moving around because people can't afford anything, how exactly do the rich oligarch's think they'll stay in power. As far as I can tell, it'll all crash around them.
