I, and many others, are incredibly disturbed by the recent actions taken by our HHS director and the recent resignations at the CDC. The latest issue of my newsletter was supposed to discuss vaccinations since August is National Vaccination Awareness Month.
Small, incremental change
August is National Immunization Awareness Month. In this issue, I wanted to write about the importance of getting the appropriate vaccinations especially since the school year is starting or has start...

It was a pleasure speaking with Cara Santa Maria about my book and about how to recognize and talk to folks about disinformation. The podcast is very conversational and absolutely worth a listen. Fellow nerds unite!

July is Shark Month and is reaching its end. It is also the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie Jaws. And I am heading off soon on my next scuba diving adventure to Belize where I hope to dive with many sharks!

I had the pleasure of speaking with Jenny Rice on the BIZ Tips podcast about my entrepreneurial path. We talked about how I got my start as an infodemiologist and where I go from here. It's a very quick listen with some wonderful information. loom.ly/-DOjgBk

Libraries and books are an integral part of my life - and I am sure an integral part of many of your lives.

The latest issue of my newsletter (loom.ly/oBI-vJ0) deals with my "history" of books/libraries and some summer reading recommendations. Please also share your recommendations!
Ignorance is bliss – but not something we should aspire to
This past weekend I was cocooned in the warm embrace of books at the @American-Library-Association's annual conference in Philadelphia. A fitting location for an organization providing “leadership for...

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the @American-Library-Association's annual conference in Philadelphia with my publisher @BroadBookGroup. I came away energized but also sad. Our present administration has cut funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (@us-imls).

Just seeing this (I need to check more often). Loved talking to you and your students. Thank you!
It is also longer than my normal posts. I think you will find that it is worth the extra time to read it.

I've had a difficult time writing issues of my newsletter because there are so many topics I can tackle that I can't decide. I chose to write about witch hunts this week because it is, sadly, more than timely.
I also break down the American Public Health Association public health priorities for this week.

We have already seen (and may have participated in) rallies, protests and the like to fight against such cuts. We need to continue to put pressure on elected officials to ensure we have the tools we need to promote health.
This comes at a time when we see the dismantling of health care infrastructure including access to care and funding for needed services like health care innovation and research. Health care impacts each of us with maternal and newborn care topmost.
Nearly all maternal deaths are preventable with access to healthcare a key component in that survival.

Investing in maternal and newborn health (or investing in health in general), is an investment in the future, not a cost.
According to the WHO’s website, “based on currently published estimates, close to 300,000 women lose their life due to pregnancy or childbirth each year, while over 2 million babies die in their first month of life and around 2 million more are stillborn. (From NativeHope.org)”
World Health Day is celebrated each April 7, the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO).
