I don’t think the dub version is bad by any means but I do think the roughness of Sanji’s English voice sometimes covers up some of the softer, subtler line deliveries his Japanese VA gives

The sub version with the relieved little sigh Sanji gives when he finds Zoro and the kind of forced nonchalant tone he puts on before he actually gets a proper look at him says so much about their relationship.

One of the only scenes in OP that I do think loses something from the sub to the dub is Sanji finding Zoro in thriller bark. Like it’s really not that different in the grand scheme of things, and I think the dub gets the point across, but when I watch them back to back I feel like

Objectively, what is canon is that Sanji SAYS he hated his time on Kamabaka. Anything beyond that is an interpretation of the text. Whether or not you BELIEVE Sanji when he says that is an interpretation of the text.

I can’t stand when people say it’s “not canon” that Sanji overcompensates his masculinity/heterosexuality or that he actually did like Kamabaka ect, because it’s a perfectly viable explanation of the text. Neither interpretation is more “canon” than the other.

There’s a difference between statements that are objectively not true (e.g. “One Piece has no queer characters.”) and statements that depend on your own personal interpretation of the text material. (e.g. “Sanji did/did not enjoy his two years on Kamabaka.”)

I think it’s a shame when has Sanji use a French endearment other than “mon chou” for Zoro because it’s just so perfect like what do you MEAN it means “my darling” but directly translates to “my cabbage” ???? That’s so zosan coded I could cry
