I think the biggest problem in language learning right now is traditional language courses' obsession with learning grammar first. It bogs everything down and for no good reason. When I was first in Germany, no one cared that I was using the wrong grammatical gender or case. They understood me fine.

I don't think any language is too hard for immersion. If a Chinese toddler can learn Chinese, then I think non-Chinese adults can too. I learned German by immersion, while I was traveling in Germany. You don't pick up the grammar as fast, but grammar isn't all that important for communication.

I try that occasionally, but I find I need to be CEFR B1 at least to get much out of it, so I'm okay in German, but it hasn't helped me much in Spanish, as I'm only A2.

I found the "Dino Lernt Deutsch" book series helped me a lot in German, but I haven't yet found anything as good for Spanish.

I agree. Short of going to a country where the language is spoken and living there for a few months, in person classes, preferably with a teacher who values comprehensible input, are probably the best way for most people to learn a language fast.

Babbel is not at all like Duolingo though: it's too grammar-focused for my liking, and even if that were not the case, unlike Duolingo it's not free.

Not at all surprised, to be honest. I left for good in 2022 when they changed the whole system to a linear progression tree that stifled the flexibility I loved about the system.

When I was there, the company had a habit of instituting changes no one wanted and completely ignoring user feedback.

On the other hand, judging by some of the emojis in her name, I'm guessing she voted for genocide (the blue variety) last November, so I'm thinking some of that karma she's hoping Republicans will receive will be coming for her too.

I really wish "No Kings" were more than just Democratic Party recruitment drives. It's sad I think, because due to the fact that they sheepdog protesters into an "acceptable" (non-threatening) form of protest, they make real protests that much harder to organize.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong on that.
