What is rarely understood is the knock-on effect crushing the universities will have on the local communities and local economies. All of those places rely on their universities. All cities across the country are in the same boat.
Britain's university system is now in freefall. In the last two weeks, redundancies at:
*Aberdeen
*Arts Uni Bournemouth
*Bangor
*Durham
*Exeter
*Falmouth
*Greenwich

Another key judgment: should doctors involved in withdrawal of treatment from patients to end their lives also be given protection from their names being reported in the media? Yes to a degree but such reporting restrictions may be time limited.

Solidarity with both groups today (women and trans women). The Supreme Court judgment reminds us of the sensitivity around the debate of the meaning of ‘woman’ but also the importance of legal clarity. An example of Statutory Interpretation at play.

Equality Act 2010 is intended to protect both biological sex (for women) and certificated sex (for trans women) separately and these remain separate groups with separate protection according to the Supreme Court’s judgement today

An interesting example of the complex dilemma of protecting witnesses whilst also ensuring a fair trial for defendants. Cheryl Thomas’ research should alert us to the need for an adjustment to the judge’s warning to the jury to avoid the unintended consequences the use of s.28 CJA 2003 has.
NEW Video-recorded cross-examination should help victims. But could it lead to fewer convictions? A bitter row has broken out between a leading jury expert, barristers, Ministry of Justice & Victims’ Minister Alex Davies-Jones.

My story for The Observer:

Victims’ minister accused of ‘factual inaccuracies’ over use of video evidence in UK trials
Top justice expert criticises use of MoJ study to back up claims by Alex Davies-Jones that there is no impact on conviction rates when video evidence is used

It is not reform of the planning laws that Labour should be focusing on but a reform of the construction industry so that affordable homes that last are built where they need to be built.
UK 'doesn't have enough builders' for Labour's 1.5m homes
Builders and developers say reforms are needed to recruit more tradespeople to build the homes being promised.
