Similar to Last Harbor, hard for me to separate. The end of California is devastatingly beautiful.

Maybe an homage to Nick Drake's Northern Sky? Eitzel has less hope here and compares to the dying sun.

Totally. Doing this whole thing has made me realise he can pull out the whole lyrical pyrotechnics (I've Been A Mess being best example) but can also do quite simple effective stuff, which might even be harder.

California is one of the most important albums in my life, 1st AMC i bought. My last 3 tracks are all from that album.

Eitzel pours it all in here, no fireworks from him or the band, just quiet desperation and devastation.

The writing in this is incredible... the Lazarus zombie metaphor is so good.

The section from 'your beauty, is just a slap in the face' is wonderful. Add in stunning music and you've got a bona fide classic.

Sleeping Beauty, another track released solo first, on Candy Ass, then redone with 2nd gen AMC on The Golden Age.

AMC version is better as the music is super lush. Really like the repeated refrain on hands, just lovely.

...on Patriots Heart, it's not on my list - i admire it more than love it.

Lyrics great if bleak, music a bit meh. He does it a lot live and I've grown to like it more as he really commits.
