I'm resisting the temptation to post every picture I ever took of this thing #gunpla #gundam #zaku #gunplaphotography
Decent #diorama progress on the damaged concrete but I need to figure out that inside portion. IRL its often light dirt or gravel thrown around when a runway is cratered, but this is one of those cases where I might go cool over real. #gunpla #gundam #battledamage #scalemodel
Thanks! No, but I've heard of them. These are Prismacolor Artist pencils I happened to have. Apparently you can treat them with thinner, but i haven't experimented yet.
Hm, yeah, colored pencils seem to be the way to go for cracks on this pavement. Not sure if it's in-scale exactly, but looks pretty good anyway (to me at least). #diorama #gunpla #gundam
Diorama preview, apparently. RG RX-78 fist for scale. #gunpla #gundam #diorama
This evening I continue clogging your feed with #diorama updates. Messed up some asphalt, on purpose. Needs another pass or two with oils but looking less factory fresh than yesterday, which was the goal. #Gundam #gunpla #scalemodel #weathering
Oh yeah, probably some oil spots, tread marks, and light wear of some kind. An overall oil wash for dust, too. I think the bigger risk is honestly overdoing it. It's so easy to get carried away with weathering once you get starte, at least for me.
First time doing something like this, but its coming along (fingers crossed I don't screw it up!) #diorama ##scalemodel #weathering #battledamage #gunpla
Some more progress on the ol' #diorama. Cement is looking good, but not sure about the tarmac. It looks super clean, which is neat, but probably a little too clean. I'll have to think about layers to add. #gunpla #gundam
Diorama update: pre-shaded the pavement and took a crack at the dirt area. Dirt looks halfway decent already but let's see what happens when I start adding layers. #gunpla #gundam #diorama
Working on some battle damage for my diorama. This Citadel texture paint is pretty nice, although I'm going to prime over it to make the color scarring way more subtle (and not so brown). #gundam #gunpla #diorama
Nah, glue what you have to. It's always been past of the hobby, it's just nice not to always need it. Early MGs even came with extra builder parts that required glue to use.
They are pretty easy to move in my experience. Put them in ziploc bags and stack them in a rigid plastic container. Leave on limbs but take off anything too pokey. Add bubble wrap between layers if you're paranoid. I've done it three time now, including an international move.
(9 of 9) Final post of this modeling Sunday; just a look at the base with the Gundam and Trailer. Gonna do a lot of fiddling with the pose by the end but you get the idea. Tomorrow is pre-shading, then paint. Not looking forward to the dirt...
(8 of ??) Okay, here's the curb. Not primed but luckily it's white/light gray in the anime. For the pavement, I sprayed Mr. Surfacer 500 far away and at a high pressure so it would partly dry, something you generally avoid. Hopefully the subtle texture will make it look more real once painted.
(7 of ??) We are scribed and primed, mostly. Forgot to add the curb so I'll fix that now.
As I posted I realized how suggestive this pose from this angle is
Thanks! I'm glad you think so.
(6 of ??) I could've opted for carving it in the base foam, but polystyrene will give me some more control, and be a little bit more in-scale. 1/144 is really tiny, so pavement should be pretty smooth. Keeping it separate also lets me paint it separately from the terrain. brb, scribing
(5 of ??) So here's the pattern I have so far on my polystyrene sheet:
(4 of ??) Airports also gives me some inspiration of how to break up the flat surface so it's more visually interesting, such as markings and different surface shades. Those concrete pads have quite a bit of tonal variation, and even mixed up angles. Check out my local airport, FRA (Google Earth):
(3 of ??) Anyway, one of the oddities is capturing the pavement and ground of the scene. It's like a dark teal gray, which is a bananas color for pavement. It could be metal, but to me it reminds me of the ramp at an airport (www.airport-suppliers.com/product/inte...):
(2 of ??) What makes it challenging (in a fun way) is translating 1979 not-the-highest-budget animation into a realistic diorama. There's just a lot of things not really shown or glossed over, like the canvas cover Amuro moves aside. Where did it go, Tomino? WHERE DID YO-
#Gunpla Diorama Deep Dive (1 of ??): I'm recreating the very first Gundam scene with an EX Gundam Trailer and the RG RX-78 2.0, complete with base. Basically this shot: #customization
Diorama preview. Going for simple concept with thorough execution. #gunpla #gundam #gundam0079
Personally I really like the Tamiya Tamiya 74091 Scriber, I have other scribing tools with different bits but it's super solid and easy to use for basic lines.
