Black metal potato. That is all.
Considering making Black Metal Friday both all black metal and only older albums (or at least nothing from this year).

Now onto Wolves in the Throne Room (Diadem) at least.
Only one way to start off Black Metal Friday: Darkthrone.

Thinking I need to update my list of folks I chat with so I can engage more than scroll again.

Early bsky was easier bc I had so few connections so just scrolling wasn’t even an option if I wanted to be on here for more than a few minutes.
One of the great things about early Bsky is that we promoted the idea of engagement. That is, instead of follow for follow, we followed those who conversed with us. Engagement leads to connection. So please, let’s not lose that! Engage, not just like—that’s why I follow folks, myself!

Okay, but I am actually thankful for this place and all y’all. It’s been a good thing the past couple years.

Oh so “you have to confront your trauma head on” is also not a good way to get someone to play a board game.

Annual holiday tradition of trying to get the family to play Pandemic but nobody will because of that whole pandemic thing.

Apparently “lean into the sharp points of life” is not as generally persuasive as I had imagined.

At least now I also know what I can say over the Thanksgiving meal—it’s an all-purpose banger of a phrase, really.
“One, two, fuck you” is an all time great count off in music.

Here it is, my 2025 album of the year list, in order! Took a long time to settle on this but I finally did. What's yours look like? Any similarities?

The debut full-length of this melodic hardcore from North Carolina does it exactly right. An instant replay from me. Fading Signal, Only an Echo, from October this year. Solid guestspots, including Contention.

In defense of scoring albums in reviews and ranking them on lists:

1) You always communicate levels of enthusiasm. I don’t rate albums at all but I’m sure y’all can tell when I am enjoying something vs. loving it.

2) Ranking helps to figure out and show others what was most engaging for you

Speaking of aoty lists, how’s everyone’s prep going?

I have a pretty good list of 10 at the moment with some others as a maybe, and I typically have 10-15 albums on mine. So, room for some late discoveries / late releases without creating a crisis.

It’s weird that this year is the first time in years I’ve felt the pain of not being connected to my academic networks and career—particularly related to not going to the big AAR/SBL gathering.

Not sure why now, and likely won’t really figure it out, but just recognizing and offering it care.

Oh, looks like metal end of the year lists are starting to drop!

I really enjoy this time, the magazines and blogs are nice but I especially like getting to know what stood out to all of y’all.

Came home from work at the main hospital and these fuckers (my family) found a stray cat and brought him home and the kids named him “Boink” apparently after a sound our car made.

Anyone a Kaunis Kuolematon fan? I really liked their 2017 and 2020 albums but the last one didn’t hit me at the time. But their newest comes out Friday and I’m definitely curious.

It continues to be quite helpful to contemplate how my whole personality and self-identity could collapse or shift.

This morning, getting a clearer sense of how reputation/validation/affirmation plays such a formative role in how I shape and present my self.
Dharma reading on #4 of the 37 practices, on impermanence, and contemplating today the impermanence of my psychological life.

It is unsettling to remember that by accident, illness, or other cause, my whole sense of self and personality and reality could collapse or drastically change.
