Ringo Lam’s The Adventurers, filmed on a global scale, plays like a warm-up for Hollywood: big scope, little to no soul. A messy shoot, rewrites, and delays didn’t help, but the problem runs deeper. Lam’s realism flickers early, then fades. He got better when he came home again.

Happy to support re-issues like this one from Eureka, even if my old VCD viewing already told me this was minor stuff. SHAOLIN BOXERS is a brisk 78-min Golden Harvest pickup. Competent, occasionally lively, but pure filler from the post-Bruce Lee product era.

The only review of a certain film on @letterboxd.social is mine. I choose to believe that makes me a pioneer, not a weirdo.

Since the thing with the 4 just got announced, thought I’d catch up with the thing with the 3.

Reviewing the first half of Eureka’s Exact Revenge set, The Eunuch comes from a fresh voice in Teddy Yip, delivering sharp revenge beats and fierce swordplay. Pai Ying, in Dragon Inn reprisal mode, doesn’t disappoint. A lean, confident slice of early-70s Shaw wuxia.
Tsui Hark’s Knock Off getting an American release, with most of the 88 Films extras, but with added and much longer writer-interview. Likely only topic covered is how Michael Wong saved the movie.

Good option for US customers while Europeans should wait for Arrow to announce theirs. That’s the beauty of the Cinema City/Golden Princess deal going global.

Actually two commentaries on the go, at the same time. We sure can multitask.
Well, you should because the Filmark brand, despite using the same technique as IFD, is sometimes just a wee bit more special. Let's just say I don't think Godfrey or IFD had it in them to make Robo Vampire. A delightful film because so much of its footage was done by Filmark themselves.
How you crank them tracks out and at that rate, I'll never know, David. That is an impressive discipline. Even if we were in demand, we could likely only do 2-3 a year. Got two on the go now though, and that feels like a lot.
What if there was a Dean Shek movie where you didn’t want to throttle him, where you actually rooted for him as a battle-scarred hero? That’s The Raid (1991), from Tsui Hark & Ching Siu-tung.

Hear why Shek is the right fit as Uncle Choi in the latest episode of Podcast On Fire.
Off the top of my head, Godfrey essentially kept to these credits, other than his name:

Godfrey Hall
Benny Ho

The Filmark credits like Joe Livingstone, Edgar Jere are not real persons. Likely a combo of their in house talent like Tommy Cheng, Kong Do etc.
I've just come to the conclusion the internet will not correct these wrongs ever but we can all do our small part to inform and share with each other what is right and wrong.

First tell that something isn't Godfrey Ho: The Filmark logo. No Godfrey on that awesome Robo Vampire indeed.

Tsui Hark & Ching Siu-tung bring comic book chaos to 1930s Manchuria in THE RAID (1991), an adaptation of the Uncle Choi manhua.

No, the fame via this post has clearly gone to my head and am now taking it personal when you don't listen minute ONE it's dropped. ;)
We'll have a discussion at some other point about this skipping of episodes nonsense but you're a sweet boy nevertheless 😁
