Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Rahaan was deadly last night. Relaxing and therapeutic to dance for 3+ hours to some good house music. He played an edit of Stop Making Sense that seemed to perfectly suit the gloriously goofy crowd.
The sound system was different this time, so my ears took a hit (worth it though obviously)

Haven’t done a wine post in ages, so here you go. This one’s from central Greece and blends traditional Greek grape varieties. It’s dry with a slight suggestion of salty fizz. It’s lovely. Quaffed it with some fish tacos & guacamole

Niamh & I been Rahaan fans since the Fatty Fatty lads brought him over years ago. I’ll always remember one particularly good party he played at in the old Space 54 (ní Flux) studios when they were in Smithfield during the recession times
