Wouldn't it then just represent the size of the field better? And postdocs and students having more opportunities to lead a proposal doesn't actually sound very bad to me.
How about a cap on the number of proposals people can submit? Maybe 1? It looks like people want to increase the odds by submitting more proposals, which makes things worse? Sure, you might have more than 1 good idea per cycle, but do people really have time to work on them? And you can share.
Lol the brand name NASA is so strong in the Netherlands that they put it on (groundbased) kids' telescopes. Should say ESO of course!
A children's telescope with NASA printed on it.

At least our floor squeegee seems happy.
Floor squeegee where the connection seems to show a happy face.
Some more words and opinions along these lines, which I wrote a while back: weirdatmospheres.blogspot.com/2020/05/peer...
Academia is supposed to be an open environment where people can disagree with each other, but people are happy to keep your work invisible if they disagree with some minor thing. I suspect many rejected papers are perfectly fine and rejection is wasting everyone's time and mental health.
I had to look up the word. It does seem to have a different origin, but I love how its name reflects the sound it makes.

Morning all. Here’s a cat thing. You’re welcome. xx
Poster of stylised cat with quote about cats being smarter than philosophers. Which I suppose they are.
I was already grossed out at "AI trend"... almost all of it makes my skin crawl.
Autumn colours in the garden.
Purple flowers with yellow core. Above it a tree with red/orange leaves.
Besides the writing, I think doing good science is very much a creative process, and the reason why I personally enjoy it so much. I think this is also part of the reason why I don't like the increasing focus on making a tool that does the method (ML, AI, ...) instead of trying learn something new.

Santos-Sanz+ with “JWST occultation reveals unforeseen complexity in Chariklo’s ring system” - I’m fascinated by #exorings and seeing more activity and weirdness with small bodies in the Solar system gets me very intrigued indeed….. #astrosci #astrodon
A plot showing the light curve of a star passing behind Chariklo's rings. A horizontal line, with two narrow dips. Zoomed in panels showing the eclipses in detail show positive excursions from diffraction around the edge of the rings.

Today Mathilde Mâlin et al. posted on arxiv the results of #JWST MIRI/IFU observations of young exoplanet Delorme 1 (AB)b (arxiv.org/abs/2510.07253).

For the planet they find a (hydro)carbon-rich disk and molecular hydrogen outflow. I tried to make an image of the system, including outflow:
A large pixelated source is at the bottom. A smaller pixelated source is above, surrounded by a violet glow and the violet is extending towards the upper left part.
Neat way of showing where in the exoplanet atmosphere different molecules contribute to the observed spectrum.
Lustig-Yeager & Sotzen+ arxiv.org/abs/2510.06169
Left shows a contour plot as a function of wavelength and pressure. Different colours indicate different molecules. Right is the total relative contribution per molecule as a function of pressure.
Also saw someone posting that she kicked the bouquet. Couldn't help myself laughing.
Nog een +1 hier. Komt wel veel voor dan?
Kudos for the credits in the first tweet and the alt text.
Lots of bad things about children using social media, but my daughter is now doing karaoke with a group of random kids around the world.
Started to learn how to paint. Learning a lot and still a lot to learn. Lots of happy hours of fiddling in any case.
Yeah, hence my question mark :)
