I'll go further and claim: Almost all conscious social/public-image optimization done by EA was a mistake.

in retrospect i think the weirdness points post might've been the most damaging rationalist/EA strategy post of all time. we ended up optimizing for respectability at a time when the meta was rewarding boldness
