Day 1 of the international summit on genome editing: as well as a stellar opening panel (Jasanoff w/ Baylis, Church, Cohen, Williams) we’ve already had bioethics in the medium of dance (Pigeonwing Dance Company) and a screening of ‘unspeakable conversations’ w/ O’Reilly (playwright) in conversation.

Much reaction has focussed on data security. Some on the value of research resources. The issue of how to square the ideals of a global republic of science with technonationalism got less attention. A major concern is that the shrill reporting undermines confidence in research participation.
In response to a recent Guardian article about why approved researchers in China can access our data, we have provided some additional information for our participants, including how we follow Government guidance on who can use UK Biobank.
