Mine only knew English. I didn't take a foreign language in high school, not with newspaper, yearbook and choir. So I dove into the deep end with college Russian. To be able to read Chekhov in the original.

Languages don't come easily to me. I am still not a fluent Spanish speaker. But I can pronounce "libros" with the proper inflection. <g>

Oh you'll make it. Most of my class were foreign language majors who knew French well. I ended up speaking Russian with a French accent.

Our journalism stats class had a prof just arrived from Japan. We all had an awful time understanding each other. Felt bad for him.

Wow! Good for you! Minoring in Russian language and lit was a hard slog. Just learning the alphabet took ages. And most of it's now gone except for some stock phrases.

I know how hard it is to rig traffic lights because I saw the remake of The Italian Job.

Having stayed at hotels where cons were located and where they were not, proximity is a big consideration.

I can relate. Still miss reading the wire copy as it came across the teletype. When we could get it in the late '80s via computer, well, it was hypnotic.
