Combined with School Streets, side road zebras could be the thing that enables many more children to walk safely to school 🙏
Going to be speaking about Side Road Zebras at this @livingstreets.bsky.social event at Uni Westminster with @maxsullivan.bsky.social and NRP. Riveting stuff. No, really!

Reclaiming urban spaces from cars, as Paris has done over the last ten years, is climate action - both mitigation (fewer emissions from fewer miles driven and more miles on public/active transit) and adaptation (less asphalt and urban heat island effect, more parks, trees and shade).
According to the City of Paris, in the last 10 years 150K trees have been planted & 45ha of parks created in the already hot city, all intended to not only improve quality-of-life today, but also help the city adapt to & manage summer heatwaves of 50℃ (122F) by 2050.

Just the start.

Common sense.

Main shopping streets in towns & cities should give people room to just wander, from shop to shop, chatting, browsing, without the stress of cars.

Oxford St can do it, why can’t Penarth?
Just LOOK at how people take up the whole space!

This is what city centres should always look like.

People like car free streets, what can I tell you. … 10/11

As our kids go #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re afraid of. If more kids walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a massive number of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school. HT Ian Lockwood.

Spread the word.

The more kids are invited to bike, walk and take public transit to school, the safer, healthier and smarter it is for EVERYONE. It’s shocking how much vehicle congestion in cities is actually “driven” by trips to and from schools. #BackToSchool #LetKidsBike #LetKidsWalk cartoon by Yehuda Moon

Pedestrianizing a main street spine in central Reykjavík was controversial with businesses when it was first done, so they made it a summer pilot. They kept it that way, a pilot, for over a decade, and then went ahead and made it year-round and permanent. No big deal. No controversy. People like it.

Squint your eyes, use a healthy dose of imagination and you could mistake these pictures for Windsor Rd. in Penarth.

Why wouldn’t we want this?
Knowing it needed to adapt to survive the challenges of the 21st century, Alkmaar’s main shopping street of De Laat has undergone an extraordinary revitalisation; engaging the community in a reimagining process that introduced lush vegetation, water features, pedestrian priority, and ample seating.🧵

Along with 20mph speed limits LTNs are the best things that councils can do to reduce the danger posed by motor traffic.

Is it time for us to have this conversation in Penarth?

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods save lives, it’s time to stop pretending otherwise
The news that Labour have decided not to proceed with the previous Conservative Government’s “Plan For Drivers” should be welcomed, but should also hardly be a surprise.
