the Data-ass way my husband just called me a dummy: "you have a way of undermining all functionality"
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I was honestly surprised the concept art was actually his work, it looks like someone emulating his style, quickly

the man's work is etched into our brains, in my case sitting on a shelf in my house, but that was the past and he should remain there
A social media post from Andrew Probert (years back):

"What makes Trump such a great President is that HE LOVES AMERICA. During his first four years, he fought every opposition on Earth to bring America's respect level back up to what it always should be; even beyond the Kennedy years,... and certainly WAY above our National embarrassment of Obama's service to his Muslim background and bowing & scraping to all Middle East
Countries. Trump has lead an insane fight against child trafficking, sex trafficking, & organ harvesting. He has freed America from the global financial system and put America
(and the world) back on the gold standard. He created the Space Force which will insure (through an amazing satellite
system) secure voting and secure banking.
So,... yeah, I can't wait for his re-emergence,.. hopefully this month or next-"

bold choice getting an artist with a history of racist comments and support for the current anti-democratic regime to do art for your utopian vision of the future

what would any of us do, really
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
honestly was enjoying all the Enterprise shots, obscured by typical swirly particle effects they may be
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
could be a simulation, could be anything, we'll see. trailer was cute, the aesthetic looks good, I'm still down for it
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I mean, I gave it a shot even knowing what I was getting into, but I'm a sick completionist
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
the set looks amazing, just a sign they were economical in reusing some stuff from previous Treks so they could use budget on building a lot of other new stuff
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I'm feeling budget constraints... is the Athena bridge a redress of Fed HQ which dates all the way back to its origin as the Shenzhou bridge?

I think there was a not huge but not
inconsiderable audience out there, including me, who would've loved a follow up to TRON: Legacy. this wasn't that, it was clearly marketed to tell you it wasn't that, and worse the star is toxic and gross. so they basically made this movie for no one
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
not loving the reused assets, particularly for a semi-post apocalyptic timeframe
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
his performance is incredibly boring, hopefully that benefitted his coworkers but made for a dull ass movie
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
yup. the movie completely revolves around him, he gives a terrible performance and he's gross irl, you can't get past him
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
TRON: Ares: bad vibes and surprisingly ugly, the total opposite of TRON: Legacy
The red grid from TRON: Ares, a movie which takes the simple iconography from TRON and the ethereal, fluid glass aesthetic of TRON: Legacy and over-re-designs everything with harsher lines and a more industrial look. TRON but grunge, a total misread of the magic of this universe.
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
wait what was the explanation?
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
oh there's no way they didn't look at both of their works
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
there's a lot of Calatrava in there too, particularly the Saturn-class
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
tbh I never noticed until you pointed it out... they even had an interior set for the hallways haha
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I think the refit Discovery is a beautiful update. totally into the floaty engines, doesn't have to make sense
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I think the teaser looks great, the sets look incredible (costumes eh don't know why went back to gray). I'm just accepting that 32nd century tech is gonna be unambitious. to be fair, it's a heavy lift depicting technology 1100 years from today, on a television budget no less
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
exactly. just look at how much new stuff TNG introduced to the universe (sometimes at the expense of TOS iconography), audiences accepted it and now dustbuster phasers and tap communicators are just as iconic as phaser pistols and flip communicators, etc.
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
many of the ship designs are heavily referencing the architecture of Zaha Hadid and Santiago Calatrava. their works have been Hollywood shorthand for *the future* for a while now

I think some of these ships look great but yeah def first draft vibes. Athena looks like it had more care put into it
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
viewers understand there's no difference between photon torpedoes and quantum torpedoes and far future techy torpedoes, but yeah they didn't want to lose the iconography too much. understandable but I wanted them to go wild with inventing new stuff
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I thought programmable matter was one of the coolest additions to the lore, I want more new stuff like that, but the popping in and out of rooms with the transporter was pretty jarring haha
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
you say abstract sculptures like it's a *bad* thing

imo the far future tech and ships should be even more abstract. they're still using photon torpedoes, warp speed, phasers, transporters... the same Trek tech 900 years in the future

The starship designs of the 31st Century in Discovery and now Academy just do nothing for me. I liked the DISC refit, but the rest look like floating abstract sculptures. I appreciate the thought behind the design evolution but find it unconvincing from a storytelling standpoint. #StarTrek
