Game developer, Android Games DevRel, roboticist, dad, and a bard so bad that he causes psychic damage. Previously worked on Star Wars BB-8, Space Miner, and those Sphero robots.

Opinions are my own (Google doesn't want them, especially bagpipes).

He/Him
Why are they called "pickup trucks" instead of "mannyvans"?

My daughter even went and hung up my pennywhistles in the blank space. But it's sparse šŸ˜†

It has an alto sax mouthpiece, but almost bagpipe fingering (thumb hole, but you don't close the holes and there's no pinky hole).

I'm hopelessly down this rabbit hole. If you need recommendations for a third flute, let me know šŸ˜†

How can you just not love these folks? Huge thanks to Kirbycatcher, Starrodkirby86, Raveille and the maimai community for showing us their technical prowess in this Level 15 Showcase!

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go put *my* hands in an ice bath from all the clapping.

Gah, Ikea pegboard. I should get an idea pegboard though.
January 8, 2026 at 11:31 PM
This is an area of active research for me right now. About half of those flutes used to be on my idea pegboard, so that real-estate has been freed. I need to go out and find calipers to see if the pen holders I see on Etsy for the pegboard will work for my whistles.
January 8, 2026 at 11:27 PM
The whistles are how it started for me. Then I got self conscious about running around with basically Irish recorders (which I shouldn't, now I can play them just as well as my other instruments). This is most of my whistles (three are missing, and one of those has me worried now šŸ˜†)

It's from a ren fair though, so accuracy isn't the goal so much as vibes. Everyone has Irish bazoukies (an instrument from the 70's), and I'm usually pre-gaming with a mountain dulcimer (older, but invented by American settlers in the Appalachian mountains).

Before I read the index, I was assuming the "travel saxophone" with the bent alto sax mouthpiece

It's cylindrical, so more like a clarinet. The finger holes are like a bagpipe (thumb hole for the octave, but no pinky hole). It doesn't have the double holes like a xaphoon (or recorder).

They sound great, stay in tune despite being not tuneable, look cool, and are cheap even for folk flutes. They're quiet though and a little tricky to sound, so I typically don't bring it if I'm playing with anyone.

It's my crystal flute (from Hall crystal flutes). The "bow" is my cleaning rod, and propping it up helps the... "condensation"... drain.

I do have the flutes labeled in my alt text, but I'm also hyperfocused and will go on for hours about any of them if wanted šŸ˜†

I play uilleann pipes and absolutely love them! It took less time for me to get used to than a transverse flute.
January 8, 2026 at 10:04 PM
The only one I can't play at all is the ney, but I can start to get a sound from it.
January 8, 2026 at 9:08 PM
As is typical of men my age: I finally have a flute wall.

I can do either one of these reels, but I want to play them in a set and my brain immediately combines the B parts into a muddled mess.

I'm starting to build a backlog of 3d printing projects I want to do. Which is dangerous because last time I ended up with 3 3d printers to basically make $10 of spare replacement parts around the house and some small fidgets -- and then I entered an endless maintenance cycle.

My 8yo is obsessed with Dr. Who and Pokemon right now, which I consider a parenting win.

Watching AGDQ is reminding me of various games I want to make. But at least if I'm doing music, I don't have to go through a conflict of interest review šŸ˜†
January 7, 2026 at 5:00 AM
Granted, now I have the problem of needing to control three very different difficult instruments: flute, bagpipes, and banjo. And I don't want to give up any of them šŸ˜†

The pennywhistle and dulcimer is in there too, but the barrier of entry is much lower (I jump to them on bad days).
January 7, 2026 at 2:12 AM
I had my first fretless banjo lesson today, and outside of my index finger killing me from clawhammer strumming it's really fun.

I don't have perfect intonation, but I'd be leagues behind if I hadn't already developed a bit of an ear trying to keep uilleann pipes in tune.

How good is Lumines Arise? Well, I didn't exit a trance state until my contact dried up and fell out of my eye from a lack of blinking.

I'm slowly adding Ikea pegboards to every wall in my house šŸ˜†

Queue me refreshing searches for mandolins and tenor banjos on Facebook marketplace.

I started pulling out a dulcimer, which is strange in that _that's_ usually my secondary instrument. But you'll never get a crunchy octave jump.
