I picked up two of Criterion‘s recent Blu-ray releases. I remember seeing Eyes Wide Shut in a Waco theater back in 1999 and being impressed. It may not be Kubrick’s best, but it was a worthy ending to his career.

One of my favorite things is a restaurant mural, and I found a good one at Mumphord’s BBQ here in Victoria. Just look at that bad boy grilling the meats!!

I know I’m a nerd, but I can’t tell you how excited I am to have gotten my new library card! (And I dig the stained-glass design)

I was at the local library’s used book sale, and this note had fallen out of a book. If I’m reading this right, it says “p. 309 — eating and preparing rotten meat.”

Really? This is what we’re taking notes on now?!

I went to the B&N at Deerbrook to shop the Criterion sale one more time, only to find dozens of police cars surrounding the mall. I think the universe is telling me to cool it on the blu-rays. 🤷🏻

If the NYT had asked me to submit a ballot for their 100 Best Films of the 21st Century (rude that they didn’t) here’s my list (alphabetically):

• Anatomy of a Fall
• Bamboozled
• Cache
• Cold War
• The Lives of Others
• Moonlight
• The New World
• Oppenheimer
• Pan’s Labyrinth
• Phantom Thread

The first of what I fear will be multiple trips to the 50% off Criterion sale at Barnes & Noble!

One of my former students brought me a chocolate-covered scorpion as a late Christmas present! It really only tasted like chocolate, but there was a kind of grittiness that reminded me of sunflower seeds.

J.R. Richard. My grandma took me to get his autograph in the early 80s. I had no idea at the time how great he had been, but I still have the autograph.

Judging by the length of the drive-thru line, people in Baytown are way too excited by the reopening of Church's Chicken!

One of my students did her presentation on Jack the Ripper, and she made buttercream cupcakes with bloody axes embedded in them for the class!

She earned an A. 😭

Got this CD set yesterday; it's an impressive reissue of the original 1971 live album from Harrison's benefit concert. Not only does it have some of his fantastic songs, it has Harrison and Dylan performing six Dylan songs as well! Best of all, this reissue benefits UNICEF.
