What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

It's December 1 - today, start practicing leaving your job on time so you have the habit established by January 1, 2026. If that's not possible, start taking your lunch on time (and as soon as you can - start leaving on time). Stop giving these workplaces your free time.

Today’s mission: Look up your local public library board and find out when they meet. Review the latest agendas and meeting minutes. The anti-library crowd counts on you being too tired or busy. That’s when they sneak in bad policy and remove books. Don’t let them.

The number of people I see going down THE HIGHWAY staring at their phones is ludicrous.
We’ve 100% lost the war on using phones while driving and it’s the worst.

This is totally true. There is a weird concern that elite higher education is over representing women. So men get judged at a lower standard for everything (like in the rest of life!) yet women keep succeeding at a higher rate.
Biggest shocker at my talk today, which is consistent with my other talks and media stuff, is that the acceptance rate for men and women are different at highly selective institutions. Men have a much higher acceptance rate because most colleges are scared to go beyond a 60/40 ratio.

The judge in the case between 21 states and the administration blocked further dismantling of the IMLS by Trump. It'll be appealed, but we've gotta take the Ws.

However, she has stayed the effect of her order until Dec. 11 to prevent disorder while the matter is under appeal.
